Years ago,the H1 era, we use to heat up grease to liquify and paint it on the chain, anyone still do this?

I havent done that for years, used to pull the chain off but it in a bucket of grease & then heat the bucket up until the grease was nearly liquid. Then pull the chain out & left it to drain overnight!
But chain technology has come a long way since the introduction of O rings, better quality steel also.

I have used grease instead of wax in the cold weather cuz I think wax is too stiff to be a good lube at low temps. What I havce found is that the hightemp grease mucks up around the front sprocket quite a bit. It doesn't melt and drip away readily because it is designed for high temp use.

Grease will be a fine way of lubing your back tire......,Even EP grease will heat up and fling. Use products meant for chains. As mentioned O & X ring chains are far superior to anything we had back in the 70's. So is the available chain lubes.

This is true. Still think petroleum lube has better ;properties for lubing at low temps than chain wax. Have not tried any other lubes.

High temp grease I have used stays on the chain for 500 miles but it flings. Not really a problem except it bugs me that I have grease dropping out from behind my sprocket cover. Apparently, the high temp helps keep it on the chain but also, it does not melt away as easily as other petroleum products.
