Simple (and stupid) Question...
07/20/12 7:21 AM

When I bought my '08, it didn't come with the owner's manual...and I'm sure this question is answered therein...

What's the wire loop under the seat next to the toolkit? Looks like a helmet lock cable, but it's too short to be of any use.

Thanks!

Yes it's a helmet holder.

Thanks! Makes one wonder why they put a helmet lock on one side, and a wire loop on the other.

"Just gave you an optional way of security a passenger's helmet"

Why not 2 loops, or 2 locks? Guess maybe they had two different groups of engineers that thought their's was a better idea, and management placated them both, lol?

And I can't figure out how to use it either...it's too short to loop through a chinbar and back to the hook under the seat. My Ducati and BMW had wire cables for helmet locks, but they were 18" to 24" long.

To use the helmet cable you run the cable through the "D" rings of your helmet and then hook the eye of the cable over the metal tab. No it is not a stupid question.... It is just something that you never think about until you have a need for it. I know a lot about beer..... because I always have a need for it. - LOL

I figured that must be how it worked, but running it through the D rings will only result in you coming back with a pair of cut helmet straps attached to your bike, lol. If it was longer, you could thread it through the chinbar.

I understand the concept...but around here, if you leave an RX7 secured by the straps, you'll come back with your D-ringless helmet gone. If they would have given another 12" of cable, you could loop it through the chinbar.

And I still wonder why they put a keyed helmet lock on the left side, and the cable on the right..instead of two of the same style.

Guess I'm just bored today, lol.

The reason for the shortness of the cable it to try and prevent losers from being able to get in and cut the strap. If you look at Dragking's excellent post you will see that the "D" rings end up as close as possible to the seat. I am hoping Kawasaki incorporates a Seat Monkey similar to the famed "Truck Monkey" to deter theft.
