Tire size question
05/08/16 8:37 AM

Just wondering if I should stay with the 190/50/17 rear of switch to a 190/55/17 rear tire. I did this on my Ninja 1000 and it made a huge difference in how well it handles in the curves. I was wondering if it was worth it to do on the ZX14 or just stay with the factory size. The only thing that concerns me with the 55 is you are more likely to hit the pegs or rub the body if you lean too far. I have noticed on the Ninja 1000 that on the 50 tire I had little to no chicken strip on the tire but on the 55 I have about 1-1/8 inch of strip for the same bike lean. Just hoping the pegs give me some warning before I scrap a pipe or fairing.

I've run two 55s now, a S20 Evo and currently a Rosso II. S20 Evo, I don't know, tires weren't that great to really say. Rosso IIs theres definitely something to them. Overall it seems more difficult to scrape the pegs although I am now at the edge of the tires tread completely.

I had M7RRs and really liked them. With the Metzeller rebate, I ordered a 50 and 55 set. So I think a lot depends on the tire, I almost think with these Rosso IIs a 55 is too much as far as turn in. Getting towards the edge of the tire/lean it's almost teetering although I'm starting to be able to read that fine line better (instead of 8ths in 16ths) and it's not so much I either slam the pegs down or no touch down.

I'd almost say you just have to try them. I'm thinking 55 M7RRs will be similar to Rosso IIs but not sure, a 50 might be where it's at really. It seems to me with 55s, the front is more prone to pushing at lean. Ultimately, I don't think I'm any faster on 55s so take that for what it's worth.

A taller rear tire should give you better cornering clearance. It is harder to reach the edge and that indicates that you have more height at a sever lean.

I've stuck with 55s since changing from a 50. It's been so long, it's hard to say how much difference it makes. I definitely noticed a big change in low speed turn in and that is what has kept me convinced to stick with 55s. If the turn in is all that much better at high speed, I guess I don't use it because the bike is so big and powerful, I'd rather avoid trying to make too abrupt of line changes. My main concern in cornering is maintaining traction first and avoiding scraping hard parts second. I don't believe the extra side tread or posssible larger contact patch of a 55 compensates for all the power at hand. I doubt I would go slower with a 50 on there. Maybe if I was wearing a 50 to the edge which I came close to doing but never quite made it all the way. I guess I will have to try a 50 again some day. For now, a 55 looks a lot better and is added insurance. I love the Pirelli Diablo Super Corsas. Less impressed with Michelin POwer Ones. Like BT-003 but most don't seem to care for Bridgestones. I like them as well as BT-016.
