Was hit by a drunk driver and bent my front forks. Any recommendations where to buy new forks to replace the damaged ones?

Any wisdom there for us, to avoid the same fate?

What happened?

Meb,

I had my rear tire and oil changed at the Motorcycle shop. Upon leaving, I was in the right lane going westbound. There was a white car in the left lane. As we crossed through an intersection, I noticed the car to my left start to move over towards me. He was T-boned by a 26 year old female that had gone through a red light. This impact was so hard it knocked that car into me.

After reading the police report. The 26 year old female was intoxicated on wine. She admitted being on anti-depressants and anxiety medication along with a "few"(yeah right) glasses of wine.

Well, this was at 11am on June 25th. So I would bet that this young lady has a problem. I am just very lucky that there was that car to the left of me to absorb the impact. If not, I would surely be talking with God.

Meb, you mention is there any way to avoid the same fate?? As I replay this, in my head, I would say that I should be more aware of my crossing of the intersections. I always look when starting off, however, not so when the light has been green and traffic is already crossing through. You ask a great question, safety is only as good as we are continuously aware of our surroundings. As you know, we must forever be defensive and ready to act.

The insurance adjuster had my bike brought back to my house yesterday. I will buy it back as a salvage. They will total my bike (2007 ZX-14) at 7000.00. At first he told me the salvage was going to be a few thousand, however, yesterday he told me that the salvage is only 300.00. I told him to send it back home and I will fix it myself which is why I am needing assistance with the forks. I should have my check in a couple weeks and I can start purchasing my items to get my baby blue back up. Thank you all for the help.

Demo,

Thanks for the reply. It will take a couple weeks to get the paperwork done and paid. I will definitely be hitting you up when I am ready. About 2-3 weeks. Bike still starts right up and sounds great.

Glad you're okay there.

Unless I'm following a car up to and through the intersection without having time to drop in beside em...I always try to get next to the car as I'm approaching and going through...like you did.ESPECIALLY if there's cars waiting to make a left turn oncoming. They see the cage..but they often don't recognize a bike going through.Again...sorry about the wreck...but glad you're okay.

Another bolt from the blue. Dammit!

I'm never looking for a car to run a red, when it's been green in my direction for some time (say I'm 5 back...)

I'm the guy counting "3" before moving off the stop. I get a few extra yards of space in front of me when I do this. I get a clear look around too because of the extra room I've made, a look around through the "hole" sort of.

I try to never be next to a car, or in it's blind spot on either side. I'm well back, if I can be, so oncoming can see me, when they're making their left in front of me (hopefully not).

But this, this, well I don't know. Shit.

Thanks for the lesson, now I have something to think about for awhile.

I don't ever take right off from a light UNLESS I have totally clear vision from the intersecting lanes. And you have to be careful of those 'cross traffic' stop signs.Lots of people stop, then take right off without really looking for cross traffic.I hate those stop signs...Had a few stop, then pull out. They just don't see bikes.

I'm changing my mind about this. I'm going to adopt what you guys are doing. It works for you, I can see this now.

My wife confirms this is what was taught to her at MSF class, too.

It's a good idea, and so I learned something today.

Good advice Grn I hope every rider out there rides and drives like this. Even when I'm out riding raunchy I never throw away the basic safety concepts like this because murphy's law.

I tell people that I (and suggest they) practice motorcycle safety techniques while driving to keep myself in practice and they just don't get it at all because obviously the stretch between 4 and 2 wheels is a big one. But the same idiot that will t-bone you on a bike will t-bone you in your car. The same idiots that hind in blind spots for me on my bike are the same idiots that hide in my blind spots while I'm in my truck. Also considering that I've been through CDL (class A) training much of the same safety techniques are taught for big trucks as motorcycles.

Trucks are the best 'block'...you KNOW a cage is gonna see them, and they're usually in the right hand lane.I just get beside em...no worries.

muzzy - Glad you're OK ... Wow.

I also learned something new here. I'm constantly looking for all cars that are or could be aimed at me, but hadn't consciously thought to use a car beside me as a shield.

Thanks GRN for the tip.

Of course, you also have to watch to make sure that shield doesn't change lanes into you, whether outside the intersection ... or in

"Of course, you also have to watch to make sure that shield doesn't change lanes into you, whether outside the intersection ... or in "..hopefully you've timed it so you're both in the intersection at the same time.Your possibility is very possible.

Hopefully,no one here is cruising alongside Semis for any more time than just to pass...those tires are deadly when they blow.

Grn,

Great reply to everyone. The cage can be our best defense. In my case, it saved my life by absorbing the force of the original hit. Forever thankful, and thanks to you my brothers for your uplifting support makes me feel much better. Cagers do not know how we stick together. "Our greatest Offense is using cagers as our Personal defense" a Muzzy Quote !!!

God Bless You all,

Hey muzzy, take a REAL good look at the frame around the steering head. It doesn't take all that much to crack these new age aluminum frames. I once bought a ZX10R that had a frame that needed to be "straightened". I found at least 10 cracks in the welds under the frame rails.

I treat every stoplight like an NHRA tree. I don't know why I haven't been ran over yet. I guess I'm lucky like that.

Thanks Maddevil, I will look at the frame around the head this weekend. Jimmy, I like the analogy of the NHRA Tree. Will remember great practices as these. Engine is fine, however, I will need to replace the forks to start with.
