GT30 turbo and oil restrictor... and no water cooling..
07/23/09 5:17 PM

This reply from Himni Racing in Fla about an oil restrictor for the Garett GT30 turbo:

"... the turbo should be used with water. Not doing so will drastically decrease it's life. Without water, the turbo has 12-14 months life span. With water, countless years of performance will be had. Not using water will also void it's warranty. If you don't use water, you should drill the oil fitting out to a .070 size. (Twice the size of the hole that's in it now). Careful not to go too much as it will cause issues too."

hmmm.. what do you all think? I haven't heard of anyone using water cooling on a bike with a turbo yet...

I've heard a few folks say hooking up water from the 14 will make it run hot. If there was a reasonable method to prevent that, I'd consider using water too.

I will see if I can find a drill .7. I know by eyesight I have nothing close.

I will now put Himni Racing on my list as where not to go, or recommend. WTF are they talking about. My GT30R turbo has 8k miles on it, going on 3 years on the bike, and still laying down ass kickings.

Life's too short to deal with assholes.

Because the turbo is exposed to an almost constant stream of cool air on a bike, most bike turbo's are air-cooled only. I'm sure those guys were talking about car applications, not bikes

I drilled out the restrictor to .062. Now I have to find a good, local I hope, ceramic coating place and get that done, turbo and exhaust. I'll try and modity the exhaust a bit so fit standard studs-n-nuts on the two places where the 2 allen head bolts were used.

Other than that, some cleaning up of wiring, relocatingt the gauges again-podseperating them out, see if I can put the cruise control buttons in the left handlebar pod, that should about do it.

Then off to make a took box.
