Question for NewB on 2006 zx-14
05/08/16 11:18 AM

Please take a look at the following. Its a 2006X-14 with 27,0000 for $6,000 as you can see its been stretched a bit. My question is this been riding cruiser for a while now wanting to add a sports bike, should I go with stretched or wait and find one not modded, thanks for input.I don't have any plans as of now going to track. But the Zx-14 fits me well. or I could get the silver one for 7,000 out the door with 33,000 miles 08 model, 2 new tires

If you're looking to get the most out of the bike's sporty side you want stock wheelbase and height. It's a fun bike to flick around but does take some effort. Any extended swingarm will severely impact any handling abilities, so will lowering but that's mostly ground clearance.

Price seems a tad high are fairly close to KBB values (08 has +25% milege). I'd think you could probably find a Gen 2 for around 8-9k, it's quite honestly what you should aim for if it's at all within your budget. Really is a different bike, the 14 (Gen 1) is great an the 14R is greater.

Hi, Mack.

Well, sounds like you are buying from a dealership which might give you a little backup if there is a problem with a used bike and you don't have that at all from a private sale....BUT $6-7000 for an 06-08??? Fok, I'd pay that for a 012-2015 with less than 10k miles but not for any bike with 30k miles. Any bike should have new tires if they really want to sell. just saw a guy a couple threads down get a brand new 14R with 0 miles for 11k$. I'd offer 4000. If they don't take it, just walk. You can get a used 14 for $3000-4000 from a private sale if you are willing to wait. If you can't wait, I'd still not go higher than 5000 unless it has very low mles.

Far as the extended swing arm, that probably was for looks. It looks like the extension was welded which is a minus and a good point to bring up when making your offer. That is not an aftermarket racing swingarm but you could mention concerns about possible hard use. 6k$ is way too much to pay for an 06 track bike with 27000 miles. I can guarantee you the dealership doesn't know if that bike was drag raced on a regular basis or not. The extended swingarm will probably give you a smoother ride if the shock is adequate to handle your weight + the extra several inches of wheel base. If it's OEM shock and your over 220 lbs, might be a little mushy. You might not wan't want to carry a passenger. Also easy to scrape the oil pan going into a parking lot and reduces handling. If you are going to ride it pretty reasonably in corners, I'm sure it will still handle a lot better than most cruisers. The extension is for wheelie control when doing hard launches....I've never seen a welded one like that. They do make bolt on extensions if you want to have longer WB without going all out with a whole aftermarket swingarm.

The 08 was updated from 06-07. It will have much more power below 6000 rpm. You can fix that with a fly removal and Power Commander on the 06. Otherwise you run neutered to 6k rpm and then it goes full power very suddenly. 08 flies open at about 3200 rpm so your just getting rolling and the full power is not so extreme.

I'd make a low offer. I doubt dealerships are very willing to budge but what they are asking is too high. You could make a deal on a used 14 with a private individual contingent on a compression test/mech inspection and come out far better. My 08 with 45000 miles has a little low compression according to the gauge i bought. On the low end of spec with one cyl just below spec. I can't tell the difference and the bike is too fast for me under most conditions except rolling in a straight line and even then it scares the crap out of me. If you have real low compression, I guess I'd not bother or offer riculously low price and give the guy your#. If an old bike has good compression, grab it if the price is right but not $6000.

Check the chain stretch measurement. 30k miles is about the end of the road for the OEM chain. New chain and sprockets lot of work. Was the valve lash checked? It will be in need of adjustment by this many miles for sure. Exhaust valves will all be tight. HUGE job. Expensive or very time consuming if you do yourself. Brake pads? They're shot if they're original. Coolant brake fluid been changed? Spark plugs are ready for change if original and those should be changed if the valve lash was done. Check for oil leak on LH side of valve cover. Often concealed by rubber heat shield blanket. Not hard to fix with new updated gasket. Engine vacuum synced? I'm not sure it makes a world of dif but man what a PITa to do yourself. Makes loud rattle from upper RH side of motor on startup--normal if it goes away in 30 seconds or less but you may want to have an APE manual cam chain tensioner put in or modded OEM. Gives off a lot of heat in warm weather/runs at 4 bars--normal. You might see 5 bars in GA.

Full exhaust is a big plus. Lighter than slipons.

Yes, go with the gen2 if you are willing to spend what that dealership is asking. $8000 for one with 10k miles or less--ok. $9000, you might as well look for a brand new one for 11,000 IMO. Heat is more under control, I don't hear about the CCT rattle and no valve cover leak. 10k miles You still have time on the big maintenance jobs if you want to put those off. More power is always welcome too. I think about +25 hp.

Hey thank you all for the well informed information I have decided to wait it out on that one. I did find this
one its a 2008 with 7,300 miles one owner asking 6,800 said he would take $6,500 with 2 jack stands, full gear and drag gear and helmets that fit. He has to sell due to wife. This one seems much better, thanks again for the information. I seen this one and heard it run sounds wonderful. going to ride it tomorrow.

The other one also had a very loose chain and shifted hard also but I thought that was me...

2006X-14 with 27,000 for $6,000

Pro:
First year - Hidden bottom torque.
Dash - Has a better mode/trip button system for codes shown, display refreshed - wink~wink.
Not within frame recall - Never touched, ie, less messed with.
Mileage - Borderline vs price.

Con:
Mileage - Too many mods point to abuse. How much? Not 6k worth to find out. 5,200-5,600 is more the agreed price.
No stock parts - And stock, excellent condition, is Under 6k, IMO. And now I just stopped-came back, found kbb's numbers and I'm more within range was just my opinion on a guesstimate. 4+ is trade-in and 5,940 is for again, all stock, excellent condition means, no scratches, dings, dropped, crashed, abused, modded, and the price drops from there is now walk up to the bike and bid.

Chain/x'3 - That's how much lube, how much is a set, plus labor is this big ticket item. Once you see neglect, add that to the other parts needing lube, service, etc.

The slow fly opening - Only downside, but a few mods take care of that.

7,000 out the door with 33,000 miles 08 model, 2 new tires

4,800 6,900 kbb says this is overpriced too. More like $6700 out the door.

Pro:
Factory added 1 hp to the bike.
Different ECU and injectors so you need both for any swapping.
The k-skid kicks in for this year?
Same performance with a faster fly opening.
Feels stronger up top, but who knows?

Con:
Back to 33k on a chain that was how well lubed?
Back to big bucks times 3 parts; plus labor removing swingarm; we run factory continuous link?
Pipes are not stock.
Shield is not stock.
Hidden mods who knows?

Hard call if prices fall in line.

I think this might be the one if it was me. MSblue is the best color ever. Look at it in the sun once, you'll go crazy. Only thing is the drag racing gear. Is this 7300 miles one quarter mile at a time? or is it an occasional weekend drag strip excursion? Ask to view clutch pack through oil filler hole, take good close up pic in good light, post and we'll evaluate the life left in that clutch and if it was drag raced a lot. The clutch is tough but if drag launched many times, there might be the chink in the armor of old "bullet proof". Bring to shop and do compression test. Good exhaust. Does it have a PCV? Under 10000 miles 6.5k sounds good. I'd grab unless you're taken so much with the gen2. Little faster but little heavier too. They say the handling is not impaired by the extra weight and longer wheel base. You could make this one faster than a gen2 with a little NOS if you're into that. About $2000 for everything you need to run NOS safely. Used turbo, maybe $3000.

Look at this beauty!

Well I can say this according to him he never got to take to the strip, he just never did. but bought the gear. He said there is not a scratch on it. I am defiantly not going with the other one. I did not want a stretched one,

Stretch is cool if you have the power to really need that. Some people like the look but I'd only do it if I was wheelying in third gear.

If you are real comfortable with the seller, just drop your 6.5 and ride your new bike home!

SWEET! IDK if that header is ceramic coated silver or if it's brand new. They usually turn color after a short time. Congrats. I'm happy for you.
