Lost fairings in mid ride
09/22/15 7:43 PM

So I have a quick question. Has anyone every had their fairings fly off in mid ride? A couple weeks back I was riding on the freeway around 155-160 and my fairings on the right side just completely came off. I noticed the screws broke off the front cowl and everything went after that I guess. The only fairing remaining was the foreman fairing which is screwed into the frame. Think that's the only reason it stayed...

So I need new fairings and bolt kit.... Any suggestions????

so all the screws broke off or you didn't have the ones in that hold the lower and mid?

holy sh!t, fred! Maybe that plastic rivet came out a/o the bottom faring screws? The bottom screws on the lowers tend to get rattle out. The metal brackets on the engine get hot and those screws will fall out unless you use blue LokTite. Do not ever use that stuff on well nut fasteners but for the solid fairing mounts, I always use it.

Never happened to me but Kruz said he witnessed the same thing happen to a busa that passed him on the expressway a few years ago (fail). Some dude with a chick on the back zoomed past and all the sudden the fairings exploded off and flew everywhere. The busa pulled over to the side butt naked.

Other than that, only Ricky Gadson.

DAMMMIT! another set of fairings. Up to you, do you think it could have anything to do with the aftermarket fairings? Sounds more like the lower bolts working their way out. The lowers blew open like a sail and the screws on the sides broke off. I will say, I have heard of some aftermarket fairings blowing off at high speed. Some seem to be fine at speed, others...bye-bye. I'd play it safe and spring for OEM fairings this time (Toledo East Honda--mixed reviews--they have had a few problems with getting orders right the first time but good prices). You won't get a color match with your aftermarket tail and upper but you prolly find something that will work........will they fit to the aftermarket upper??? IDK. I'd check price of OEM screws against a Pro-Bolts aluminum fairings kit. Little weight loss with aluminum and anodized screws look nice. They stay in just fine but use LokTite on the solid mount screws as you would with OEM screws.

Looks like Honda East doesn't do the 14 but give them a call. I bought busa fairings from them....they forgot to include a small set of O-rings but all else was good and they sent the O-rings after I notified them they were not included.

Honda East Toledo

........I sure miss Milwaukee. Watch for Po.

How you doin', bro? Everything's fine here in Iron Mountain, MI. Unfortunately, no expressway.

Toledo...... yea, I had the screws for the mid and lower in... looks like the screws from the upper cowl broke off and everything else went with it.. The bolt/screw at the bottom of the lower fairing was still there along with a piece of the fairing.. :-(

Rook.... Hey brother!!! Everything else is good besides loosing the damn fairings... I'll give them a call and see what the say... Definitely gonna look for that LokTite.... Damn, so all back roads for you up there? How you like up there?

This is just...weird.Still trying to picture how screws let go on the upper cowl.Sheesh.Not good.Maybe you overtightened em and started some small unnoticeable cracking at the holes?IDK.Glad you're okay though.Bummer.I'm guessing the inner fairings let go as well? The black ones inside the midfairings?

Those screws all require the plastic washers on em.Those were in there, yes? This ABS fairing material can get crushed, and start cracking.

Grn.... Yea, bummer!!!! IDK I could've over tighten them b/c I have taken them off a few times this year. The inner fairing actually was the only fairing remaining. The two screws on the rear of fairing stayed in place and the front part of the fairing was just flapping on my knee... ;-(

But I'll find some more fairings here in the near future and get back to riding.

I've cracked a few fairing tabs in my time. Those washers really give it cushion. What color is your bike?

"The inner fairing actually was the only fairing remaining".Dumb question here...but possibly did you not install the screws that go into that inner fairing and attach to the outer fairing? The phillips ones?Sounds maybe like the outer fairing separated from that inner one,and caught air in there...allowing the windstream to yank it off.The other breaks may have just been a result of that one panel tearing off. They may have been fine actually...until that.160 is a LOT of windflow into the front of the bike.If there was a gap in there...it could definitely let go...or get damaged.160mph wind...oh yeah.

Back roads are the only place to go fast and there's lots of them but cops patrol them. With no large cities, a significant % of the population are out in what we would call "the sticks". I guess they expect the police patrol too. It's a nice place but would prefer Milwaukee.
That is weird. The lowers stayed in holding a small chunk of plastic, the three top screws BROKE? If they they broke off, vibrating out was not the problem. Infact, the way the sides are overlapped by the upper, I would expect the sides would stay on even if the screws did come out. Had to be something that let was letting air in around the front wheel. Maybe the soft black plastic pieces. There should be one at the inside front of the side fairings and also one under the nose. Those three inner fairings direct the air at the radiator. Also the large plastic quick rivet that joins the lowers at the chin needs to be in. If any of those were not on the fairings, I could see them opening up and peeling back like a banana.

Fairings RemovalCheck out upper inner fairing and inner fairings. ....or maybe they were not fitting the outer fairings right as Grn suggested. maybe the quick rivet was not locked?

"maybe the quick rivet was not locked?"...could be.Once the seam(s) opens up some...no tellin what might happen at 150+....

I was gonna say...take a look at the outer fairing/inner fairing attachment point(s)where the phillips(2) goes in.Any sign of stripping out on that outer fairing projection?Like it got ripped out of the threaded hole there.Cracking around the screw well on that inner? The screw's most likely long gone...but it might have stayed in there if there was enough thread material on it.

My inner fairings have 2 allen heads. Also one small quick rivet up at the point.
