how do i know my color code
06/20/11 2:30 PM

So I was under the impression that my baby was Atomic Silver, but after I got a piece painted with that color code the paint doesn't match exactly and I'm noticing ColorRite has an alternative option which is a darker silver... this color is called metallic phantom silver....

The Metallic Phantom Silver looks a lot like the color on the website but, is there a way to really know?

Doubt it you'll match it. Solution? Color all the parts. Buy the OEM parts to rematch. Sun fade with the yellow about to set in? Mismatch and how many years in the sun/weather?

Phantom Silver is referring to the WHEELS IF I read that chart correctly for the 08 Atomic Silver model. You say the Atomic paint doesn't match your bike.Okay...it wasn't mixed correctly. That's all to that. The phantom silver IS slightly darker...yes.But for the WHEELS only....UNLESS...someone else painted your bike before you got her?Atomic Silver is Atomic Silver...it isn't gonna appear different whether it's on a Concours or a zx.
Mfg code #17M....colorite top coat...3915.You need to get these colors.Okay...and take the(a) part to the painter...have them add or remove the top coat(when mixing) or whatever to match the factory part you have.It will not appear exact just by "painting" with these colors. They have to add the right amount of topcoat and base to get it right.May take some doing. But THEY'RE painters...they should know how to do this! This color combo WILL match the Atomic Silver IF correctly mixed.

They need to "practice" on a similar piece to get it correct. If they know what they're doing...they'll get it matched perfectly.

You do NOT want METALLIC PHANTOM SILVER!!!!!!Not if you're trying to match Atomic Silver. They are NOT the same.Pretty much forget the website picture...every monitor is different, and their cameras are different as well. You have to see it in person to match it up.No other safe way.

Get yer painter to match the mixing for the color. You can BOTH check out his "practice" piece and confirm that's what ya want.(as suggested in the colorite instructions for mixing and painting with these factory blends). If you want exact matches...you have to get someone who is willing to do some practicing first to get it correct. An expert can do this.Doesn't have to be a "bike only" painter either. Some of those old guys really know their shit when it comes to mixing and matching.

If Kawasaki matched it up and sprayed your bike at the factory...no reason YOU(your paint guy) can't mix it and get it right either.
Excerpt from Bikeland about Silver Colors on the 14>>>>>>>>>>>>>
"Yes, there website is good for color information ONLY! Trust my proffesional oppinion when I say there product is shit! It is made by American Paint whitch is a generic paint manufacture. There prices are so inflated it ought to be illeagal for the quality you get. Most reputable paint manufactures do have motorcycle colors. PPG and NEXA Autocolor have the largest selection and are great products. Beleive it or not PPG's premium line is cheaper then Colorite's poop. Trust me again when you have a problem with Colorite's stuff (color match, chemical interaction, ect) you will get no help worth mentioning. I know because I have delt with them before on a few jobs that clients have supplied the paint on and redone a few as well that people have tried to do therself with there stuff. Now I refuse to use there product at all".

Might give these two paint companies an e-mail?

I don't recall EVER seeing a US shipped zx14 Model listed as "Phantom Silver"....Matching these colors has to be done in several Lighting conditions. It may look very different sitting in a paint booth as compared to being out in the sunlight.Course...you KNEW that.

I'd be careful about someone telling you "This is the color of your bike" if they really haven't done the actual research about the color schemes for your particular bike.08's...Atomic Silver. That's what I found anyway.I found NOTHING in regards to "Phantom Silver" for US shipped 14's for 08.EXCEPT...for the WHEEL COLOR.

Two Colors for the US market for 08 zx14 Ninja.....Atomic Silver,Metallic Midnight Sapphire Blue.

If you've got an 08,US model...Atomic Silver's yer rocketship's color!

Sorry...I talk too much!

Say, I was schooled via 'Remove seat' and now do you believe me this is the original color?' Boy, did that show me how that color fades. Therefore, [if you found your color] = "Doubt you'll match it" if you colored one part and it matched the color of your paint under the seat, not where the sun cooked some tint to it.

Kind of make sense now you have that can in hand? Oh let me touch up. blue, pull the seat. How we looking?

Blue and Hub good info as always... Blue definitely thank you for that info... I feel the painter didn't take the time to properly mix the paint up and try to match the stock color exactly, so I probably won't use him again..

Hub, yea the painter wanted to respray all the parts to ensure they would match.... I was trying to save money which is why i was getting the 1 piece sprayed in the first place... I needed to get the hugger sprayed, a new rear right side was $150 alone, and I ended up paying $100 for the paint and $150 for them to spray...

its not a horrible mis-match and everyone I ask doesn't notice it until I point it out, but I know it doesn't match and it heats me up!!!

WELP, heres to the information thank you

Next time when the guy suggests you repaint everything you run the other way. Yes there will be slight change in color over time but not that much. There are also machines that can scan the actual paint on your bike and make a custom match to your specific shade. Maybe look for this next time. Did this guy paint the part as well? Maybe this was intentional to get you to paint the entire bike. I would take the part back and tell him to repaint it until he gets it right. Maybe bring in another piece for him to match it too. There are a lot of lazy paint shops out there.

For example, before I learned to paint, my wife wanted to get her bike painted. All the parts were primered and just needed base and clear. I went to a company known for their auto painting and had been in business for a long time. The had me pick a color out of the catalog which ended up being Viper Yellow. When we got them back the primer shown through on the edges and there were big drips. My wife was so incensed she brought them back and bitched them out. They ended up giving her money back and said they never wanted to do it in the first place. Then why didn't they say so before? Assholes. Plain and simple. My little bike pieces weren't a high enough paying job for their special asses to put any effort into. Did I mention it took them two weeks to get it done?

Moral of the story is, these people have ways of using your lack of knowledge to their benefit to avoid being responsible for their f'-ups. Just like mechanics.
