If I'm installing an APE manual tensioner, do I need to remove the valve cover?

The head cover must be removed to install an OEM CCT. The OEM CCT is installed with the tensioner spring locked. The only way to unlock it so it is set properly is to give it a push with a long screwdriver inserted through the head/cam chain tunnel....which is why the head cover must be removed.
If you simply remove the OEM tensioner, the APE will bolt right in place. The APE tensioner is set by screwing it in or out then locknutting. No spring like the OEM tensioner.
....so NO. Do not take your head cover off to install the APE.

See steps 11-12 for setting OEM CCT after installation. CCT REMOVAL
Hope the APE works out for you. PITA to pull the head cover just to reinstall the OEM CCT. I will be installing my APE soon.

My 09 has 6700 miles on her.The cam chain sounds ok now.Wonder how many miles I can expect before I need an APE?
It's hard to hear little noises over my Alienhead.Thinking of buying the Db silencer that Brock sells.

mine needed changed at 7500 mi, its a piece of cake just keep your thumb on the kill switch when you first start it up cause boy let me tell you the noise it will make if you don't have the adjuster in far enough lol

I have 32K on my 08 and it rattles for 15-20 seconds on startup. Seems to be worse after I adjusted valve clearance. I left the small, top section of timing chain guard off. Maybe that is why?? ...or more likely, the OEM CCT was self adjusted one notch tighter before the valve job. IDK. gonna put the APE on soon.
