Muffler Painting
05/02/11 7:25 AM

Has anyone painted their ZX14 mufflers with high heat paint and/or had them powdercoated? I am aware that the high heat paint would come off very easily with a rub or if scratched but it would show me if i would want to take the differant color process/look to the next level. That level would be the powercoating process. The concerned questions that I have are WOULD THE PAINTING OF THE MUFFLERS IN ANY WAY HARM THE ENGINE? WOULD THE WATER TEMP BE HIGHER/LOWER ETC. I am NOT intrested in the aftermarket muffler systems. If there are any HIGH TECH people out there please weigh in on this post. I am just a backyard mechanic. Thanks

Yes.

"Weave sell a paint along with our wrap." Weave should have seen that shithe fan like watt do you want me to do, melt it in my home oven; bake a bike? HOw about I spray an cook I turn the engine off before 400° out the pipe, she if she bakes on that yeast infection to my bike's finish now.

Yeah, I 'mule'd' a set of headers. Looks like a map with spots of different counties. Paint here, OEM finish there. Lucky I didn't use pink-a-dink-eye-sore-think if I used that color.

Foreskin over the header is yes, lost HP. Heavy yank out the pipe is the chamber loss of hot air dripping out a touch of fuel trim. Kind of no bottom end. You lug in the street. OEM can't be beat. And if I am not beating meat, I'm beating bike.

Is that a blind curve coming up?

There is a very cool pic of transparent blue painted stock cans on the top of our forum now and then. I do not know which member it is.

What brand, Slow? I need to cover over my mat black ceramic which is looking like shite these days.

The durability of spray paint may have to do with how open the flow of the pipe is. My pipe really doesn't ever get hot. A system with more baffles and packing might hold the heat a lot more. ????

VHT Hi-Temp i believe is what it was. . Got it from oreillys.

When i ordered a name plate for my brock's pipe a while back, they told me I shouldn't order one of their colored plates, i needed to order a black one. reason being, I wasn't running a baffle (this was the sidewinder).

Their explanation was, the open pipe actually made more heat then the baffled pipe, and would fade the colored badges.

Never made sense to me.. but i trust them

Yeh rook what Slowninja said sounds pretty good as it's temp rated at 1300-2000F so now im doing my modified Header Pipe in VHT Flame Proof Paint, the main thing i've learnt is to not touch the pe- painted areas with un-gloved hands and use a good thinner like Prepsol or an appropiate cleaner and don,t touch it !

I used the VHT on my VW rails' pipes and all I can say is if you don't plan on it lasting you won't be disappointed. First time in the dunes running the engine hard the paint burned up to a crisp and flew off the pipes in wisps. Just my experience though. This was on some pretty old pipes which I had cleaned real well before painting. But I think the years of oil and grease getting on the pipes and them getting hot and those oils soaking in may have made paint working impossible. However, I was just shocked that it burned off and blew off like charred peices of cardboard in a bon fire. Maybe I put too much on?

Good luck, hope it works for you.
