Tip on opening your stock gas cap easier.
04/14/12 10:06 AM

Just thought I'd mention this because some guys say they've had problems with "stuck" caps and even damaging their keys.
Some of you may have an actual problem but I have a method that some of you may not know about.
I believe a lot of the problems are caused by pressure build up. If you try to open the cap under pressure by simply turning the key to 3:00 and lifting up, the pressure will cause a jamming effect on the key. So it's simple; just press the front area of the cap down moderately with your left thumb first and then turn the key to 3:00. As you lift you remove pressure. This relieves pressure from effecting the smooth operation of the key.
Works for me.

I always did that and it made the lock turm much smoother. Always did it to close the cap too. year 5, the lock gave up the ghost. I had warning signs. Now I have a 1/4 turn keyless cap. I think the OEM is a good looking part though twice as heavy as an aftermarket.

,.......actually, the OEM cap I had was fixed with a good dose of SeaFoam DeepCreep.

Never tried that trick, mines coming up on it's 6th birthday and I'm afraid I'm going to twist the key off in the lock one day.

Thanks KAK, I'll sure give it a try!

you will have a battle with it one day and find the key is permanently bent/twisted. Happened to me that way. shoulda grabbed the DeepCreep sooner. I shot powdered graphite in it in years passed. saw wite crust building up around the hole. I think if you never let it sit too long w/o openning the lock will stay freed up. The Deep Creep is a fine thing too. Hub said those tipe of products that "clean corrosion" actually react with it and prolly cause more harm. IDK, it worked this time. I imagine the corrosion eater would neutralize eventually. SeaFom's an old brand and well regarded.

I have been pushing mine down for awhile. On a ZRX I sprayed WD-40 in it and worked it in.Wiped it off the paint and didn't have any trouble after that.I'll do that on this bike before it gets rust in the lock.

Corrosion is a problem for some too and the build up pressure in the tank aggravates that condition.
If you look at your locking mechanism the two latches go inward as you turn the key to 3:00. The latches create friction against the base. With the tank pressure pushing upward as you turn the key that friction will increase and eventually you'll have problems turning the key. Pushing down first minimizes the friction.
Not sure WD40 is the best for any lock. Short term I can see how it helps but long term I think it adds to the problem. The stuff gums up and attracts dirt. Graphite is better for locks. But not sure graphite is right to use in a fuel cap or in things that aren't dry.

Yep I've always just pushed down on my caps to lock and unlock. It really saves wear and tear on the lock mechanism and your key as well. And I shoot a little wd40 in the keyslots every year or so......never have had a cap fail yet I personally like a cap I can lock, don't want folks having the opportunity to get inside my tank
