Oil leaking from hose
04/14/12 3:30 PM

I came out of work today to leave and noticed a small puddle of oil next to my kick stand. Upon inspection I noticed it was coming from one of the hoses next to the kick stand. The one with the small bottle that is from the airbox is empty. The one with what looks like it has a check valve must be the gas vent. But I'm not sure what this one goes to. I would think it is a crank case breather but I thought that went to the airbox. Anyway could someone please enlighten me on what this hose goes to and if it's normal to have a small amount of oil drip out of it. The bike has 1075 miles on it the oil was changed at 600 miles with Motul 10w-40 non synthetic. This is the first time this has happened. When I rode in to work this morning it was 39 degrees and I cruised at about 110 mph for a minute or 2 on the way. When I came out to leave it was about 80 degrees so I dont know if temp has played into this in anyway. Any help would be much apreciated.

Your scooter probably spit up some fuel when ambient temp went up. If it happens again put your finger in the puddle and give it a sniff.
Mine has done it three or four times... but only when i park in a specific area at work.

Assuming it is same setup as the gen1,

AIr Cleaner drain hoseleft side near water pump sprocket cover area there is a bottle tucked in the fairing with a stopper. Its hose comes from the bottom of airbox where any liquids (or solids for that matter) will settle to if it enters the airbox and gets passed the air filter.

fuel tank breather hoseSame general area there is also a tube/bottle a bit higher with a hose coming off of it instead of a stopper. Lets air in as gas goes down.

fuel tank drain hosethe other hose hanging there w/o a bottle. Has brown tape on the end to id it. in case you overfill and it sloshes over or expands from heat and needs to spill over it will come out down there outta that hose.

When new, I had small blackish oil residue smudge in my air cleaner bottle. Never removed the stopper. Wasn't really enough to empty. just a smudge. Yes, the oil will make its way all the way up to the airbox at times. Have seen pics before. My flies had a oil film on them. Just make sure you are not overserviced on the engine oil. If it is at or below the high mark in the sight glass----no problem. Best to be dead center between high and low, IMO.

Also had a wad of translucent sludge come out of the fuel tank overflow. Dislodged after a long hot ride on a hot day. Prolly water combined with petrol.

I don't think you have a thing to worry about. Just a little opportunity to learn some stuff. I had 0 problems with either of these situations.

Here is a pic of the hose. It did it today at work. I think it is gas that is venting out. The bike does sit in the sun at work. It was a very little that came out today a puddle the size of a nickle(had a 1/4 tank of gas), Yesterday was a much larger puddle about the size of a dollar bill( had a full tank of gas). I smelled it and it doesn't really smell like gas and it has a oily consistency but as long as that line goes to the gas tank I'm not to concerned. Anyway Rook thanks for the info I'm pretty sure your right !

The manual should describe that hose...I haven't looked...but it's probably GOT to be there. You can get oil into the airbox under certain conditions...going 110 may possibly have been one...adding in the other factors.I think that's what you may have had happen...some oil in the airbox...no problem...that's what that hose is for?(oil vapor condensing).Brock talked about this I believe...while making runs on his 14 at the strip.

@GRN14 I tried checking the manual and I couldn't find it but I haven't spent a huge amount of time looking yet. It is not the hose from the airbox that hose is the one with the little bottle on it. Brock's problem was that little bottle kept the oil from draining and it just sat in the airbox.

Mine does the same thing. I pulled it out of my garage, started it for a few minutes, turned it off, and it left a nice stain on my driveway. The leak looks like a combination of oil and gas. It was sunny out today and my tank felt hot. My leak is coming from the same hose. I didn't check the shop manual yet to see where that hose is coming from.

Hy HD doesn't leak but my Metric does. Very ironic

I don't think it's a big deal. It is the gas venting out when the tank starts to heat up. It does it more when the tank is full. I also noticed if you see it doing it and you open your gas cap. You will hear it release the pressure. I am not concerned to much about it anymore now that I know it's a gas vent line.
