ZX14 stereo options
11/11/15 1:48 PM

Had some time off last Saturday so I went to 3 bike shops just to look and enjoy the day. One of them is the Harley dealership and although I am not buying a Harley I am amazed at the sound of one of the bikes. It had a Boom 2 stereo option and that thing just rocks!! If you ever get a chance to hear one, do it! Crystal clear, extremely loud and no distortion. So that brings me to the question of what stereo do you have or sound system in your helmet? I need idea's for a Christmas present for ME ME ME.

Post too if something did not work for you.

Been there. They roll up and I hear the stereo before the bike.

I've found that stereos (and illumination) are for a segment of the scootering public to which I do not subscribe. I don't look down on that segment, they just seek a different experience from their scooter than I.

I view my 14R as the pinnacle of road-fairing performance... from the factory, out of the box. The manufacturer built on object of performance with zero extraneous effort expended on frivolity. I liken the 14R to Dr. Porche's vehicles: they had no radio. Stereos in a 911 were an option, not standard. It was assumed that someone who selected a 911 wanted to hear the mechanism, not a soundtrack.

I regard my Ninjee with the same philosophy. The whine of the primary loading up is ephemeral. Each pair of cogs in the transmission have their own note. On top of all that is the engine exhaust with Pops Yoshimura's own flair.

Truth be told, I shouldn't have plastered my thoughts on your thread. I don't even listen to the radio in my 4Humper: I like hearing the followers running on the camshaft lobes.

Download tunes onto my Zumo 550 gps then Bluetooth to my helmet via sena smh10. Also satellite radio option on the zumo that I don't currently use but would like to try someday. I understand hagrids point of view as well, a large portion of the time I spend with the music off.

I ride with an Ipod Nano hooked up to a pair of noise-cancelling earbuds. Even the quietest helmet (Shoei Qwest) requires earplugs on rides over a few minutes, and I like listening to music, so I've combined the best of both requirements. The 'buds are plugged into a Belkin Rockstar splitter along with a lead to the radar detector, so I get early alerts when the po-po are trolling for revenue. The bass range is not what it would be with a full-blown stereo system, but it's not too bad. The noise-cancellers blank out steady-state noise and let intermittent sounds come through, so wind and motor noise is reduced without impairing safety. For those who say listening to music while riding is unsafe, please turn off your car radios.

Hagrid, your a poet at heart man!

I ride with a pair of LG Bluetooth earbuds synced to my iTunes on my phone. Keeps me going between the fun roads, then I mute and enjoy the bike as it is intended. I have found I ride better when I can hear the bike. But music is nice to get you there.

Bluetooth and helmet speakers are a godsend. Bike-mounted stereo systems are kind of like 300-series rear wheels: look at how cool I am. To me, that's bike show stuff, which is cool in its own way, but not necessary for enjoying the ride.

I'm glad the content didn't reflect the title. Because if you asked "where do I fit a stereo on my 14?" I would've asked "are you sure you have the right motorcycle?"

Thanks for the idea's, keep them coming and I appreciate them. I graduated from Electronics many moons ago but was always caught up in the latest of stereo gear. Had Altec's Voice of the Highway system in my Camaro and my Ford SHO had all Boston acoustics. I still have my huge Klipsh Forte II's but have not dug them out for quit a while and listened to. Even though I am old now I still marvel over a music system that rocks. I don't mean Thump Thump bass but a truly balanced system. I have never listened to music while I ride but am going to start. I am thinking more of something inside the helmet vs attached to the bike. One for portable from bike to bike and two for theft reasons. Again thanks again everyone and just wait for my post of "Who has training wheels on their ZX14"..

I'm very interested in those Bose noise cancelling earbuds also, hopefully someone has tried them and has some feedback?

I have tried noise cancel, earbuds, bluetooth and helmet speakers, and none of them work very well. So I just gave up.
If anyone finds something that works, I'd like to know about it. But I like my heavy metal (thunder) LOUD!

I like my metal loud too. When I first tried the LGs I was disappointed thinking they were weak compared to direct connection ear buds but I found out that for hearing safety the newer wireless headphones limit max volume. In my case when the max volume on the headphone is reached if I use the volume on my source it will give me the loud music is dangerous are you sure you want it louder disclaimer. At that point I can override and it lets me increase the volume output to the headphones to max. I can barely hear my yosi's in the background when I'm getting on it.
