One more ticking noise post
05/23/16 11:42 AM

Hi, and greetings from Finland. I am new to the forum as a user although I have been reading it for some time now. My bike is 2008 and 29000 km on the clock. Service changed cam chain tensioner recently. I might be imagining sounds but I am pretty sure that there is a ticking or tapping noise after the cold start settles. I posted few videos to my YouTube account and would appreciate if someone could take a look and give some thoughts. Bike is running fine so no problem there, just the noise.

Here are the videos:

Welcome dj

Try tightening the exhaust header bolts and see if that goes away. Those are sometimes loose. I lost one. Engine sounds fine. It should turn off without knocking. Sometimes you can hear a bad engine on the last spin before it stops. No noise, no problems.

I don't hear anything unusual if the audio is a good representation of the noise you are hearing. I hear a kind of rhythmic chirping noise but it's very quiet. There's always going to be some engine noise. If you try your header bolts, use a 1/4" drive ratchet and a 14" extension with a U-joint adapter. You should be able to reach all even with fairings on. Make sure the socket is on the nut squarely. There is a torque spec but you'll have to feel it by hand.

My bike is probably too loud to really notice such a small noise but I think I used to hear something like that.

Sounds normal. I didn't really read your post before clicking videos. I thought "sounds like cam chain tensioner"! Your bike sounds a lot like mine overall, very ticky.

Did they do a valve clearance inspection/adjustment? When I bought mine new I was pretty surprised with how ticky the engine was. Never had a new bike and figured it was just needing broke in. Nope..I guess it's just how Kaw builds them! Anyway, it got quieter over the period of time to the 15k miles valve clearance inspection as valve clearances tightened up. 5 were under and I adjusted a few more. Back to being ticky ticky ticky...

Yes, my busa has less mechanical noise than my 14. The gen1 14 is more raw in overall feel so the little noises sort of match.

Thanks for the tips, I will check the header bolts asap. Valve clearances have not been checked and that probably would be a good idea...just wondering if I can do it myself or should I take it to shop.

Valve clearance is a BIG job and several things you really have to have perfect or bye-bye engine. If you never did one, probably a week's work, easy.

I think I did mine at 24k miles. Checked again at about 35 and they were all exactly as I set them. I believe it gets as bad as it's going to get after 12k miles or so and then doesn't change much for a very long time if ever.

If you have a shop do it, make sure it's a good shop and make them prove that they actually did it. You won't know if it was done by engine performance. Tell them you want to slide the feeler gauges in yourself in before and after. Pay extra if necessary. That's what I would do or don't bother. Do it yourself when you get the time.

I have the same ticking, comes and goes. I have spent a lot of money trying to trace it down and about to the point to just ignore it. I recently switched to manual cam chain adjuster, still ticks. Valves checked and factory perfect. Engine builder said it is probably my exhaust to remove move it, seal it and reinstall it, see it a lot especially with aftermarket titanium exhaust. My 650 had the same ticking noise occasionally. Runs good so I am not going to worry with it anymore.
