Valve clearance DONE finally
11/17/11 8:34 PM

As some of you might know, I have been completing my valve clearance and messing around with a few other related wrenching projects on the 14. I missed the best part of the Summer riding season. Had NO idea it would be as much work as it turned out to be. I'm just glad to have a few more days of ok weather. Just about time to call her quits but the 14 will all ready to roll again at the end of March.

Kinda thinking about getting some blue Carrozerias on there. a few other things maybe. Nitrus??? oboy that be cool. Too much too soon, you think?

What winter wrenching do you have planned (or are you riding all winter?)?

Awesome... Good job, Buddy!

... Houston, we have lift off. (pun intended )

The most we can hope for is a nice warm garage.

I don't have that but for as much as I can stand it...

Here is the busa list:

DIY fender eliminator (the busa has some cool methids of reusing the OEM parts to get rid of the fender and attach Lic plate They must have planned that.

Tail light LED --I don't think it will be quite as tidy as the 14's but I'll what I can.

Service Steering Damper.

Switch in CAnnon full system for stock exhaust

Install Bazzaz ZFI and AFR

Might go with some Black Vortex rearsets.

The 14 will get

a set of Pazzo levers

Probably a set of Tri-R Carros

Compression test

T-Body sync

Still need to make some kind of bracket to hold the Dynojet LCD

Top Speed recall button will get a sneaky bracket somewhere not so visible.

Corbin Seat would be nice but we will see.

Oh NOS, yeah, forgot that. Would like to do that one. ...but then no more Road race track. I am sure they do not allow it. Drag strip????? Nitrous would be a fun thing to play with/

I didn't realize you didn't get to ride this past season, Rook.

You are right, nitrous wouldn't do you any good on a road race track.

Can be used well on a drag strip, if you practice. You can use nitrous in bracket racing events, since its all based on your best e.t. in pre-race runs. Then you just have to run consistant in the races.

It will eat holes in your engine if you use it enough.

Ever watch Pass Time on spike or speed channel? Lots of cars and even one or two of the bikes which have drag raced on the show over the past year or so have had nitrous. Most of the nitrous runs are less than stellar and slower than the contestants predict, due to the nitrous coming on like gangbusters, suddenly, and getting the chassis out of kilter.

I'm not a fan of nitrous. I'm a fan of cubic inches, superchargers, and exotic heads.

But nitrous is cheap. Until it blows up your motor. Heh.

So I've heard. Exactly how harmful it is, I;m sure depends on how it is used and of course, how often. I just find the idea of NOS intriguing and it would be fun to feel an extra 30 hp or whatever you can get safely on a stock motor. Maybe the 14 is not old enough to risk the damage yet. I can wait a year or two.

Oh I got some riding in. Not a lot but what there was was pretty fun. I've been riding the busa while the 14 was OOC. The difference between the modded 14 and the stock busa is becoming night and day. Whem I took the 14 off the stands yesterday, I couldn't believe how light it was. It lost another couple pounds of plastic stuff in the process of undergoing the valve adjustment.

ya, hehehehe You will know nasty when I pass at about 8-9K under load. That is the sound of nasty I love the sound of the decle. Not in too much of a hurry to reshim the busa. Glad I only have 3K on it. The 14 will be getting checked again fairly soon though, since I went with minimal clearance. Prolly end of next summer.

Rook how many miles did you have on her when you did the valve job? I have 22,000 and i'm going to tackel it this winter. Were they way out? and did you notice any diff?

I have 28.5K miles on it. All of the exhausts were out of spec. most of the inlets were fine but as you see, #4 right inlet is pretty tight. you get to 0 clearance, then you do damage. who knows, maybe even a tiny bit before you get to 0 clearance something will hit from heat expansion???? I guess I wouldn't want to find out the hard way.

The clearance gets tighter as the valve seats wear. the stem sticks up higher and so you need to restore the proper clearance with a thinner shim. old shim is now to fat, you with a skinnier one. At some point, there will not be thin enough shim made. then you do a valve stem grind or maybe replace valves?? That is a lot of miles though.

The engine is quieter. No more clop, clop on startup. Don't notice any big change in performance. It's been 5 months since I rode the bike so that kind of thong is very hard to notice unless the change would be dramatic which it is not.

BTW, If you have the head cover leak, be prepared to solve that if you remove the cover. I'm in the process of doing that now. see the last few posts on this thread
