I can't drive my 14R sensibly
12/08/14 2:53 PM

Every time I get on my bike I HAVE to whack the throttle. I'm thinking of buying a second bike such as a Harley 883 Iron in which there would be no temptation to whack the throttle. I have a V1 radar detector mounted on top of the right mirror, and I try to choose the best location to whack the throttle but still if you get popped running 160 mph or faster, It's like the old Monopoly game says, "Go straight to jail..."

That way I could trailer my 14R and use it mostly for the strip. The problem is the closest strip is about 75 miles from where I live...

I have the same problem. I actually just want to go cruisin' with my bro's, but the damn bike just doesn't allow it. We can never just go out for a leisurely ride. Always turns into throttle twisting, hard leaning, riding-way-too-fast situation.

Of course, we are not breaking any speed limits, officer. We just happen to feel that the posted speed limit is way too high in some stretches, so we refer to our riding as "riding too fast"

75 miles isn't too far. @160mph only 25 minutes!

I try to choose the best location to whack the throttle

'sall you can do.

but still if you get popped running 160 mph or faster, It's like the old Monopoly game says, "Go straight to jail..."

i got popped at 110. I didn't go to jail but I did get a big fat ticket. 6 points. Same as DUI. That cured me of indiscriminately whacking the throttle. NEVER on the interstate. never. I try to get my thrills in corners for the most part. A couple risky street races and displays of power/year but I can't stomach that stuff for more than 20-30 seconds. I usually back out of it soon for fear of being spied by a cop. I'll do 160-170 once or twice/year on some desolate road. I guess I half learned my lesson. Tell ya, I must ride these bikes to top speed at least one time in my ownership. I can't believe I haven't done that yet. It's not so much a healthy fear of crashing but more a fear of "what if there's a cop."

I agree with Rook

After two tickets I've lost the desire to whack anything on public roads. Lol

I've been fighting this issue since I bought my ZX11 in '97. I even traded my 06 ZX14 in on a Vulcan 2000. Even joined the Site!
Lasted about 4 days, and cost me $600 to get my red rocket back. Just deal with it. You've been bit, and can't ever go back.
I know, it sucks. You own the fastest production street legal beast ever built. It's a burden we all have to suffer. But I promise you, nothing else will scratch that itch. If you buy a slower bike, You'll just push it past it's limits and be more dangerous than having the right bike. Like I said, it sucks. But it's a cross we have to bear.

No going back now. No way.

I even traded in the '08 for a '10 Connie. 4 years later the bug bite started itching again. The Connie has plenty of power. I've 12 o'clocked that thing from a dead stop a few times. But the need for yank my arms out acceleration wouldn't go away. Don't cheat yourself. Keep your eyes open and slow when cresting hills and overpasses. A slower bike will be more trouble than it's worth.
Been there.

People (who don't a ride ZX-14r) wonder why I've stayed in Del Rio Tx for so long. For one - deserted freakin roads virtually Cop-free!! and geography where you can clear your flighpath for Cops/Critters before you whack through the gears. Manna from heaven...

I feel ya Rook, but I got lucky, my spider-sense went off and he only got me at 85 in a 65. Better than the 110 I was bouncing off of before he got me.

however, no points. My attorney talked it down to the headlight being out... :-D

It's all about doing it at the right time and place for me. I have no desire to get locked up, or a be given a huge performance award.

I usually only take the 14R on rides that are 100 miles or more in duration. I save the fun stuff for where there is a very low likelihood of being caught.

That being said, I was allegedly testing my luggage to ludicrous speeds this summer in the middle of nowhere, came back down to the posted limit, and the county Sheriff came the other direction towards me not 2 minutes later That could have gotten expensive.

LOL reminds of the time i came screaming around a corner and down a hill where atrain bridge crosses. you can't seewhat's ahead so i wasn't going too fast but obviously getting her wound up to blast the straightaway. A Milwaukee cop came around the corner form the opposite direction and flashed his headlights at me. Couple hundred feet up the road there was a Wawautosa cop waiting in the brush. Thanks, MPD! Must have been a sportbike fan.
