Front Brake not grabbing at low speeds
10/01/11 12:04 AM

I dont know how to title this. Yesterday when i was leaving in the early morning, it was cold out and i noticed an almost vibration at very low speeds, like 1-2mph. I was nearly stopped. If my bike had ABS, i would say it almost felt like that. Has anyone else had a similar feeling when they brake at low speeds? The bike stops on a dime when i want to stop, but this was when i was just barely holding the brake lever.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you.

Viper,

It's getting cold. Tires are going to get hard. Tire step is working that vibration. Say, when that tire gets all hot and supple now, do you have the same sensation @ 1 or 2 mph? Try that. Could be cupping rearing its ugly head come cold days.

My front brake was always noisy at real low speed so I don't use it for that. I apply both front and back together and usually switch over to 100% rear brake at about 10 mph.

My front brake just squeaks at low speed (at least it used to, IDK if it does anymore). Worse in cold weather. Never had a tire cupping problem with my bike but I've heard of a lot of others who have.

Hi Rook,
It is not a noise, it is a feeling. It is a totally new feeling. It is always a nice brake noise, but this sounded and felt almost as if a plastic bag got stuck under the brake pads on the front and make it feel like rubber for a split second. Then the breaks come back 100%. It is very strange and i think the idea about the tires being cold is possibly the issue. I am going to test it out some more. Thank you.

If this did not make complete sense, i apologize. My girlfriend and i have drank a bottle of wine. I am a little loopy.

Sounds like glazed pads, maybe? Sliding w/o grabbing under light braking.

then again, if there is also a vibe, that is not the same thing as a slide. A vibe would seem to indicate a grab/slide grab/slide........there you have your vibe. In either case, I don't think there is a brake problem. If you run your hand over the tread surface, you will feel the roller coaster pattern on the tire. You may not be able to see it unless it is really severe.

.then I guess you have forgotten about the brakes for a while. Good for you (two)_.
