Smell of plastic? D'oh!
02/27/12 8:53 AM

Hi guys,

Finally started to warm up and i thought id make a small ride. However, when i started the bike i saw some smoke in the front and i smelled it and it smelled like burned plastic? It wasn't ALOT of smoke, but i kinda got scared and turned the bike off. LOL ......

Any suggestions? Should i just boot the bike up again tommorow and see what's happening?

may just be a lil oil on the front left side of the valve cover, if thats what it is it will burn off pretty quick

I'd have a cold engine, hand with a glove on it, start rubbing around the exhaust area. That is the only place something would begin to burn if it had anything near it. Look for a nest or some other debris.

^^^what they said.

5 will get ya 10 that was just some oil burning off the headers.

If the bike only ran a few minutes, that would be the only thing that coulda got hot enough to burn anything.

that's the good news.

The bad news is:

5'll get ya ten, you got the ever popular head gasket leak. You know, the one that nobody has, right?

Watch that oil closely. ride it another year maybe--until you notice you need to start adding oil. Then it be time for the washer fix...or a new gasket and other rubber head parts.

this is when the leak is in the advanced state. I was adding a couple hundred ml of oil every 500 miles.

notice the drip of oil on the header nut?

BTW, did you just switch to synthetic? If not, DONT....or it will possibly leak worse.

Don't freak the poor guy out. When you mean "valve cover gasket leak" don't say " head gasket leak"!

I stand corrected. I meant to say head COVER gasket leak. or valve cover...or the cap on top of your motor that the stick coils pop out of--whatever. It is NOt too big a deal. Just a pain to have to deal with it at some point.

I rode mine a couple years before it leaked as the pics are showing. The pics show the bike at the end of last winter's storage. Had I run the bike, much of the oil would have burnt off and it could have never got down to the oil pan. So don't fret, Matsuke. Just consider this to be the "heads up" to you that the head cover gasket has lost it's seal. Watch the oil level. Add whwn needed. WHen you start to see the oil running down the engine it's time to fix it. Perfect time to do it is with the valve clearance check.

..or maybe it was just a mouse you cooked in there. Just keep your eye on it and keep enjoying as you would otherwise.

HAhahhaha, Fuck i fail :P

By the way!!! After a ride today my girl mentioned my exhausts get very smelly when i hang on the gas. Does this have to do with the fact i got my flies out or something?

Also, ROOK!! You think it's a good idea to TRY and trade the muzzies for Tsukigi? Lemme know!

No. When you hang on the gas, you have to back off. This fills the mufflers with all that unspent. There is that whoosh of the both of you, creating a wind pocket; more at her area. That turbulates the back, makes a wall on her back. She sniffs the [lift] on the initial accel away.

Where else could the gas come from? Hot rodding!

from a sound standpoint, probably----if you like loud.

from a performance standpoint, I would think the muzzies are lighter weight.

If you could go to a full system for a street bike in Holland, I would suugest a Tsukigi if you enjoy loudness. For slipons, I think it would be best to look for the lightest ones. M4s are very light slipons and they are pretty loud too.

After a ride today my girl mentioned my exhausts get very smelly when i hang on the gas.
It prolly just has to do with the fact you have a lot more fuel going through the engine. There is always some part that does not burn. If you are burning more gas because of larger throttle oppenings, there is also a larger amount of unburned gas going through. Most of that will get burned by the PAIR---unless you disabled that to reduce poppping. I can smell a sorta gassy smell to my exhaust some time. If you want perfume exhaust, you stick to the stockers, I guess.
