Too much "play" in the throttle
05/09/18 2:56 PM

Hey guys,

My 2013 zx14r has too much play in the throttle. In 1st the throttle has to be slightly turned before engaging rhe power to the rear wheel. I want to be as soon as i rev the throttle power is engage immediately. Anyone know how to fix this issue. I think i have always had to much "play" in the throttle and i have just learned to deal ride with it but now i want to fix it.. thanks for any suggestions.

There should be a course adjustment at the throttle bodies, 2 nuts loosen the one before and tighten the one after and then retighten the one before. Then you can do a fine adjustment at the throttle housing on the clip on throttle cable.

Thanks, Bobby. It loooks like the coarse adjustment is not a part of the program on the Gen1. The end of the cable is housing is ribbed but it's not threaded.

Nitti, I would try eliminating all play using the fine adjusters first. The black plastic things with finger adjuster nuts up near the top ends of the throttle cables. One is for throttle cable and one is for return cable. It should be in the owners manual. I believe these each have an adjuster nut and a lock nut. I was able to eliminate all play with these on my Gen1.

1. Turn both thumbwheels loose and run the threads of the adjusters in so you hide the threads in the cables. i.e., the most amount of slack at the cables.
2. Push cable or return cable is the first to be turned, so you run the slack out till there is no movement. You'll know the return cable's slack is taken out is by watching/feeling the throttle turn clockwise or closed position, as if standing on the right side of the bike and looking at the throttle pipe move.
3. Pull cable will move down or ccw and this is where you run the slack out of the pull cable.
4. Turn engine on and let it idle in N.
5. Turn handlebars from lock to lock so the idle does not rise and the 0-slack does not pull on the cable and raise the idle up.
6. With zero idle raised after that procedure, tighten the thumbwheels; you are done adjusting both cables so zero slack is accomplished.
