My rear tire life 14r
05/06/13 7:13 AM

Have my 14r now 14 months and am a mature experienced rider that never abuses the equipment by doing burnouts or wheelies....

Have 4750 miles on my stock tires now and the rear center is pretty much left with little or no thread....I think I may ride it about another two tank fulls of gas and then replace it with the PR3's.

Is everyone getting about 4500 to 5000 miles out of the stock tires, or am I the exception..rather than the rule?

I never had such short tire life out of a stock set of tires, however, I have of course accelerated it briskly after it is moving......just not trying to pull the front tire off the ground or do burnouts...

Any comments would be appreciated....

If I see 3,000 I will be lucky. You are doing well.

Don't wait, replace it NOW, there is next to no rubber left below the treads! On my 08 with the BT16s I only got about 3000 miles as well, by the time I hit the wear indicators I called up the shop to get the bike in for new rubber and the soonest appointment was a week later (450 more miles of riding). By the time I pulled into the shop there was no treads left and I was starting to see the steel belt below!!

I am replacing my first set at 6700. I can almost see the air on the other side. I should have replaced them 1000 miles ago.

No burnouts or wheelies here either, but semi-aggressive canyon carving is on the menu in the Sierra Mountains where I live and I still have one more ride left on my rear tire (3,550 miles). I'm impressed with these stockers, I used to get only 3,000 miles out of the BT-016 Bridgestones I ran on my 09 busa.

It's the tire's rating is my guess? These are stock tires so this means factory was not stupid knowing you were going to move the throttle briskly. They threw on some soft compounds so you do not spin all day long with hard cold tires.

It's all about power to compound ratio. Tour wise, this is now an aftermarket compound. The bike comes with very light tire carcasses. When you change to the tour/harder compound, this will show a weight difference you initially feel right off, but adapt to it within a few stops to balance and all that change in weight.

Same deal as taking on a passenger. You feel that extra weight but soon adapt to it. You'll see once you move away from the OEM tire.

I played out a set of tires. You can see the [rear] tire's beginning layer of webbing on one side of the tire, see nothing on the 6 o'clock side. If you think you can keep air with the next layer showing, trying to burn out more rubber, you may hit air before you play the tire out and are far from home. You can't patch webbing like you could have with all rubber showing.

It would cost more to get it towed home and there is your new tire money all up in the air.

I must drive like a pussy cat because my stockers just went over 5k and I have plenty to the wear bar's. Even my mechanic was shocked to see I have that much left. Maybe extended bikes tires last longer.

I changed original set after 2900km, rear tyre was totally gone.
Next set was PR3 - rear last 6000km, front about 10000km.
3rd PR3 set is now under and let see how long.
Next tires will be Pilot Power 3.

Just changed over to Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart 1's.Got 1600 miles outta that factory rear...front...not good either.Had these on my other 14R...very good strong tires.Center compound very good at not flattening.Sides get heated up really well and grab like crazy.

Grn14 come on man, a turbo bike would not burn thru a set of tires in 1600 miles. Something smells funny???. Unless for a 1000 miles or so you were running over 180. I think some people on here change out their tires just a lil soon. No way do tires go that bad that quick unless your at top speed forever or at a track all the time.

Okay...I admit...it had about 'probably' another 300 miles in it.It was down to the center grooves(flattening) and disappearing fast.My first set on my 14R last year(my other bike)lasted 1200 miles...M5's.I cruise at anywhere between 80 and 100.Chip seal here tears shit up fast.VERY.You can see how I ride in my vids.OEM skins don't last here.

Besides...my mention of my OEM tire life isn't meant as "look at me...I go fast"...it's only meant to confirm the poor mileage out of the OEM buns...that's all.You mileage may vary;)80 -100 isn't that odd or fast. These roads here are like a grinding wheel...no gettin around that.

car,

bridge rr - new OEM that came with the bike
mich fr - new aftmkt tire on a second set of 14 rims, so the swap is on a constant rotation = Hard de har hard or soft, off the tires come. They are changed as a set. My pc money goes to tires. My pipe money goes to tires and rims. It's that kind of tire swapping with the low mileage [compounds rated] at this speed. And I'm far from being a tire engineer, so my guess is I'd want to speed rate a super soft compound in a safe kind of sheer, we don't hop skip and a jump into on coming you throttle up the come along for a ride [into the person's windshield, the bike in the front grill.

I'm not into mileage, handling, matching up tires. I'll throw it in and see what does? If the front washes, the back end comes around, not my problem. I'll never get that close anyway to find out. I was a single swapper until I learned my lesson. Both tires rolled out the garage door moving together. So if the rear wears that much, the front is going to wash even at a brisk push from the new rear end.

Same as waiting for the front end to washout is pushing it one too many times and it should have been changed with the rear as a set. So this way, my rear is going to do something funny before the [used] front takes me out again = Always change both tires as a set is my own mantra to remember.

Huh, I guess I'm the exception...

OEM tires. 8500 miles on each. Gonna get at least another 1000 miles on each, I believe.

I'm not at the wear bars, not even close.

I'm going with the new, redesigned M5 rubber upon replacement.

I'm very pleased with these OEM for my riding style, weight (170-ish), road conditions, etc.

See?...that just AMAZES me....IDK HOW you guys do it....longest I've ever gotten was like 5500 from a Pirelli Angel ST(rear). And that was taking her easy(on my 07).I think you'll like those M5's...I did on my first 14R.(came stock with em).Didn't last long...but held really well.

Yeah, the "new" M5 is supposed to be "re-engineered" for multi-compounding, in (2012? 2013?). Anyway, it's now being made and sold, so I'm gonna try it.

LOL, Grn14, if you think that's impressive, I got 20,000km out of my 2nd set of tires (Michelin Street 2CT), they stuck well enough on the sides to scrape my pegs and i've never had the rear slip under full throttle. I loved them so much my next set was the same model and I'll probably keep using them :)

How are you guys getting 4000-5000 miles out of a rear tire on a 14R for petes sake? I'm lucky to get 1800 miles out of a rear BT-016 Pro on my '06 ZX-14 and barely 1600 miles out of a rear on my CBR1000RR.

ZX-10R is gentler with the TC and I get maybe 2200, 3000 out of a rear on the ZX-6R, I'd love to get your kind of mileage.

Man what I'd give to get that kind of mileage, I drop about $1300 to $1400 on tires every year and that's for maybe 12,000 miles.

Here's the thing.

See, IMO, I think you can get that kind of mileage. BUT you have to be willing to trade something for it.

So, ** IMO **, you really would rather keep the thing you would trade: sticky rubber for whatever kind of riding extreme you want, instead of the high mileage.

It's a trade we all consider, when we approach this cycle: What kind of riding experience do *I* want?

But now here we have the rub. It costs $$$ to afford it. You apparently can afford the tires, and the maintenence bills.

Me, I go for the high mileage and pay for it in the ride I get. Thats the deal.

True true, I run the stickiest gumballs I can on both ends, one slip and it could be a really bad day, ask me how I know.
