FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Driver Responsible for Killing Four Motorcyclists in 2010 Finally Going to Trial in April

Deland, FL, March 15, 2011 – On June 16, 2010 the Florida Highway Patrol and the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office executed an Arrest Warrant for Paul Sermons. He was taken into custody under a total of nine charges including DUI Manslaughter and Vehicular Homicide for the March 13, 2010 crash that resulted in the deaths of John Holmes, Patricia Beihayn, William Barker, & Patrice Poole as they were riding down County Road 476 in Sumter County Florida. Last year, the Florida Highway Patrol had stated that not only was Sermons driving on a suspended driver’s license, he was also drunk at the time of the crash. He has been held at the Sumter County Jail under a $202,500 bond since his arrest.

When contacted by ABATE of Florida member Nancy Painter & State Asst. Sgt-At-Arms T.J. Painter, Bill Catto, the prosecutor assigned to this case, stated that “doing these type of cases is a majority [sic] portion of my job”. Attorney Catto further stated that “I am obviously aware of what the position of ABATE [sic]”, and welcomed ABATE members and other motorcyclists to attend the arraignment and other hearings as this case progresses. ABATE of Florida, Inc. has rallied motorcyclists from all over Florida and have been present at each of the hearings throughout this case.

On March 22nd at 9 am there will be a Pre-Trial Hearing at the Sumter County Courthouse in this matter. After that, Judge William Hallman, III has set the trial in this case for April 4, 2011 at 8:30 am. Casey Staley, Chapter President of ABATE of Florida’s Lake County Chapter, will be riding to both these events. We ask that anyone concerned with the negligent drivers in Florida killing motorcyclists please consider attending the hearing and trial to show support for the victims’ families as well as to show the judge and jury that the motorcyclists killed in the March 2010 crash are not alone. Please contact Casey Staley at 407-469-2455 or President@lake.abateflorida.com for more information.

How come ABATE never pushed for a, "Left Turn Law?" I think Japan has that law. Maybe we can lease it till they get back up on their flip flops.
