Flies and what else?
03/22/13 4:28 PM

Hi all.
I just found out that most zx14 owners recommend removal of sub throttle plates ("flies") on early models. I own '06 Kawasaki and I do feel that low end torque is insufficient for my needs. I'm planning to remove them, but here's a question. Do I need to tune my FI in some way to avoid too lean mixture as some people said? If I do, can it be done only with Power Commander, or can it be done with Two Brothers Juice Box or some other means?
Your advice is very much appreciated.

Think about this: When you ride slow, the subs keep up. When you rev it in N, the engine will redline you are not careful. So, the question is, will the air keep up without the subs and do I need to rejet? This is an emphatic no, you do not need to do any fuel enhancing. Subs don't work in that fuel to air ratio kind of scenario. Or else my '06 and '08 would have done some kind of seizing? Yeah right!!!!

My 08 flies out did not feel a whole lot different than flies in until I tuned it with Autotune and a Power Commander. The air will keep up with the subs or lack thereof but IMHO, the mapping will not. It's only going to give you the fuel that was programmed for flies in unless you remap = get a PC in there. I'd have to say there is definitely something to the mapping at least on the later GenI bikes.

Im an engine rookie, the process scares me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the post Rook, I had a sense without some tuning it would not make a big difference!

Flies were removed on my bird and I was very pleased with its performance. An awesome bike... it was. Pity it was stolen two days ago. But that's a different story.

Wolfy, leave them in. I went back and forth after awhile. The subs are worth keeping in. You try to outguess the engineering or improve it, it's going to be hard to do.
