Gogo Spring!
01/11/12 8:23 AM

Hi guys,

Somehow, until now the winter hasn't hit over here yet! Yeah, it's rainy .. but Snow .. Ice? Naww!

Ofcourse though, i am waiting until the spring hits again and i can have some nice rides again. My plan is to take the
14 to my Mechanic for a big checkup.

Was wondering though, because i have my Flies out (06 model), got Muzzy (slip-ons) and i want a K&N filter when he does the checkup - would it be wise to get a PCIII in there too? Kind of going easy on the wallet atm because ill be moving out of my house in a few months (living with mommy atm. im 23)

By the way, im kind of a Sprint freak with the ZX-14 (Whenever i see a long road i tend to rip the gas and just Go go!)
Are there any tires known best for their grip on those sprints? Might be dumb question, but who knows :P

Thanks guys.

P.S.

with slip ons, I'm not sure you are going to need a PC! As far as tires, any good brand michelin, dunlop, pirelli will do. If you're only doing straightaways and nothing twisty you don't have to be anal. What you have to monitor is your tire pressure and overall condition.

-ey, Bro!

We have no winter over here either. Lots of us in NA have been riding most of the time even up North. I think the weather has even been fairly mild throughout Canada all the way up to those parts where it is winter all the time (up where Santa Claus lives- lol).

i have my Flies out (06 model), got Muzzy (slip-ons) and i want a K&N filter when he does the checkup - would it be wise to get a PCIII in there too?

If the bike seems to run good with your current mods and no PC, I don't think an aftermarket filter is going to make a big enough change to intake flow that you need to change the tuning. From what I have read, Even a race filter will only create a 2 hp increase at best. At $80 (US), that is a very cost effective 2 hp but even so, not much of a change. Fun to have though and saves some dough since you can reuse it after cleaning. I have a BMC race filter but I stick with the stock filter for street riding.

Are there any tires known best for their grip on those sprints?

I'd just make sure you have a quality tire if you are regularly doing 150km/. Don't buy cheap tires for a bike, especially not for a fast one. Tires are labeled by a letter to indicate what speed they have been tested to. Y rated are good for top speed. If the Y rating is printed in parenthesis, {such as (99Y)} the tire has been tested to perform well over 186 mp. IDK how long or exactly what is considered "well" over 186. Just that it holds together, I imagine. Good performance prolly is determined a lot more by road surface at that speed. Not like you are gonna corner or suddenly accelerate or brake at that speed. LOL. (at least we would hope not).

I have used Bridgestone BT-016 at 170 mph (it is rated for 168 mph) and those tires went many more miles of normal street riding + high speed and sport riding without incident. Tires I am sure, are tested very carefully and they are overbuilt to withstand a lot more abuse than they are rated for. It would be financially risky for a tire manufacturer to make tires that just barely passed test requirements. I road a tire (prolly a cheap $30 tire) on an car until it had steel fibers sticking out and it never blew---that was on tire technology of 25 years ago--don't recommend--just sayin'.

watch out for the POLITIE!

Thanks for the tips guys! I guess the PC can certainly wait then. I don't have the feeling the bike runs lean or different at all. I just wasnt sure about the flies out. I heard someone say its better to get a PC when you have your Flies out.

Tires that are tested above 170 MPH's are good enough for me LOL. I do some curving, but not as much as you guys probably - This place doesn't have to many nice curvy roads unfortunatly!

Rook, i will def. watch out for the Politie!! hahaha!

I heard someone say its better to get a PC when you have your Flies out.

It's always better because you will have the fuel trims that will make the best power with safe air/fuel ratios. The 06-07 models have flies open at 6000 rpm so the stock mapping was leaner below 6000 rpm. You are not riding around above 6K too often so you're not in that safe, rich zone unless you are really flying. The removed flies are increasing flow on the intake side. No doubt the slipons flow more freely than the OEM muffler. You have more air coming in and more going out so where is the fuel to match it? Now you add a race filter and more air is coming in without fuel to balance it.

You're probably ok without a PC. I've never heard of anyone complaining that their bike blew up because they didn't have a PC or the right map. If a motor runs lean, I don't think there is any way to know until it is too late. However, I doubt if basic mods AFR affecting mods like you and I have are enough to melt a piston but if you had nitrous or turbo, you would NEED a map to fuel that massive increase in air flow.

+ 1. I bought my bike with slip ons and rode for a little more than a year before switching to a full system and adding a PC. You should be ok. Now if you wanna get the best out of it get a PC and a good map.

One way you COULD check for a lean condition check your #4 plug(easiest to get to).Is it showing signs of being lean?If not...great!probably just fine then.OR,guess you could have er dyno'd...see how your mixture is along the rpm range.Your factory stock map...even without flies...will most likely get an added boost from adding a PCIII Race Version and remapping the 0 to 5000 rpm range. That's where you'll really get the most from fly removal. That rpm range is not accessible without a Race Version PC....unless I'm off here? (or another similar PC device that'll allow low rpm mapping)

....but most importantly, watch out for the po.

nudder veelie!

Trying to run without breaking the speed limit seems to be a popular evasion technique in Norther Europe. didn't work for this guy. I'd be ashamed of running so slow that I couldn't get away from a Passat with 4 guys in it. I will say this though, those Dutch cops are sure fine sports and all. If that was America you know there would be guns drawn and after the suspect was "subdued" he'd have the shiitz kicked out of him. Those guys just gave the lad a lecture and lead him away like a misbehaved son. I bet they reassured him that their people would take extra good care loading the bike on a trailer and properly strapping it down.

seriously, I know Europe has it's problems too but it really seems that people just understand each other there.

also, Matsuke, I'm sure yur mum would be glad to have you stick around another couple years. You just need a pad to rata-ata-tat those 23 year old Dutch girls!! lucky dog, you.

On sustain, you won't need a pc. On hard leaves, it goes rich to 13 if not harder, then into the 11 AFR's. Sustain says you are equal flow. If there is no lag, there is no lean. If the water temp goes up, the engine knocks, then yes, pc time if that is that severe.

Thanks for the tips on the PC guys, Hub :) I'll keep it in mind for sure!

Rook, That's from a Dutch TV show indeed. They wont bash your head in for making a wheelie or going 200 km/ph.
I hate the show though, those police guys just love chasing people - and lecturing them afterwards of how dangerous it is to go THAT fast!!

OHHHH!! ANOTHER WHEELIE, U SAW THAT? He even swang a bit to the right!!

... *sigh*

Yeah, That's a good one but I find this one mighty satisfying. Hope no one got hurt in the crash at the end but that was a stupid move by the cop and Ghost Rider wasn't even trying to get away.

This one is a gem too. I gotta laugh when the cop passes him up and doesn't even know its him. LOL

..and then he chases the cop for a while and passes him on one wheel.

I'm sure cops love to chase people but I imagine most chases are over pretty quickly.
