Guys, I have read that people are changing to 17/40 gearing in Gen2 14s and are getting better 1/4 mile times as a result, but has anyone done this change on their road going bike? If so how do you find it?
1. I can't find a suitable steel 40T, did you use an alloy rear sprocket? Or an alloy/steel hybrid?
2. Has anyone tried an 18/42 as a very similar alternative?
3. I read posts about Gen2 having shuddering issues or something like that after gearing changes, was that only with a 41T rear?
4. I imagine alloy sprockets don't last long on the street, fill me in.
5. Anything else that you can suggest or share?
The reason I am asking is we are looking at steeper gearing for my sons Gen2, its a regular street bike that he also drag races so it has stock wheelbase and is at stock height. We might strap it later but he really wants to keep it in real street trim. Will the steeper gearing help us keep the front down? Will it be a lot harder on the clutch? It seems to pull the stock gearing easily, the 10% steeper gears might be fun on the street.
Any input would be great.
