I have the stock header off my '12 w 7K miles on it. I thought I read it might be a worthwhile upgrade for the previous year 14's. Any idea what its value might be? any idea how to ship the darned thing?

Good stock headers go for around $100 on Fleabay all the time. If the ports and their openings are bigger on the R, it might not fit older gens.

rod,
I'm going to make a better mousetrap, let me install the older pipe. YOu are chasing old tech and will install it on a new model? There is growth in mm, as if you blew into the breather and expanded the whole engine in a mm's proportion think. Crank rod is longer. Grow the case in proportion so the pipes hit you go swapping things old tech to new tech.
Gen 1a 2006-2007 = Narrow pipe diam; no cat at collector box.
Gen 1b 2008-2011 = Pipe diam change; has cat in collector box to make the pipe flow as first gen: no change in flow. Both gens have different muffler packing gaskets.
Gen 1a/1b mufflers fill all year headers.
Gen 2 2012-2013 = Header has the beerknowleeffect, you know about the collar to head pipe has expanded. The header has no cat; is the largest diam so far.
Gen 1's and Gen 2 headers are not interchangeable from bike to bike, nor pipe to pipe. Stick with same gen years if interchanging is needed.

Why do you think they are better?

First you must refine your definition of "better"... better flow, better weight savings, better corrosion resistance?
As one of my colleagues pointed out there is a significant chance the Gen 2 stock pipes geometry scavenges on a level heretofore unheard of. If indeed true, there is precious little to zero gain in the aftermarket.
Corrosion: there is no equal to Titanium. Without dissertation I will stop there.
Weight savings: see Titanium.

I know most aftermarket headers will be thinner walled somewhat(even SS), I know even the stock muffler link pipes are bigger in diameter than alot of slip ons but they must be to increase flow with the cat but the piping walls are very thick and crush bent anyway...
Seems like most slip ons gain 2-3 peak whp and a few in the middle just bolting them on the Gen 2 14R
the stock headers in the US have no cat, a big plus, and I noticed the crossover tubes(low and mid range driveability?)
the stock US headers are about 8 lbs, so are most aftermarket stainless steel from what I read.
Akrapovic claims about +4HP peak on their website between their slip ons and full system with no mapping(+6).
Looked at the M4 website and their drag full system with GP muffler they claim ~6 peak with their full system, but a few more lbs of torque than the full system with slipons and +2.4 peak hp for slip ons....
Two brothers claims 4.x whp with their Gen 2 slip ons, and only 3 peak from their single sided full system. Both systems have more gains in the upper mid range.
I have Ivan's reflash already with my slip ons and felt a very nice difference. Is the realistic # of 6-7peak HP right for aftermarket headers, or is their some magic headers that get 15-20 like I read claims of...I'm not interested in numbers, I want to know if it's a huge difference in power that is worth the money?
For instance, on my previous 2011 zx-10r the stock headers were so good with slip ons you might get 2-3 peak, a few more in the middle and with a full system maybe 1 or 2 more on top than slip ons and a few more than slips in the middle.....

Goin from the stock header with my Muzzy slips (cut down to 15"), to the akrapovic header and the exact same slips, gained me about 4-5 horsepower on Priscilla. I think the Akrapovic header flows great, the bends are smooth and the welds are very nice. Just my 2c.
Oh yeah, the stock header does not have crossover tubes, if you look close, those are fake crossover tubes merely for structural support. You can tell this because they have a small hole in them. Crossover tubes that function, can't have holes. :)) the stock header is great for hangin on the wall next to the moose antlers.

Haha moose antlers...thanks for the input, the Akra headers look awesome. seems like better fit and finish than anything out there, Akrapovic quality.
CBlast, thanks for sharing. Was the 4-5HP just bolting them on or with fuel mapping? How much would you say the slip ons were worth? thanks...

She needed a very minor fueling tweek of less than 1.2% with the headers, with the slips alone, the midrange improved, once I installed the slips and mapped with the flash, the difference was probably 8-10hp. Now that she is set up the way I want, I wouldn't change a thing. Absolutely love the sound and the way this setup performs.
