Just thinking out loud ova here. Letters used for sportbike model names among all the big four makers seems to be limited to "tough/concussive" sounding consonance, imo
Z
X
B
K
R
s
G
L
And sometime F

Why don't you ever see a new model called the Kawasaki J 1000 PP?

Why not M? M sounds good. Oddly, N sounds horrible.. Who would by a bike called the N-750? Not me. That's what the N stands for, "NOT."

Lets not forget H...as in H2. That sounds good. It was a little weird at first but now it sounds perfect.

Why not M? M sounds good.

Throughout the 70s and 80s Suzukis dirt bikes held the designation "RM". RM 125, RM 250 etc...

What about an NR750??

CB = Citizens Bike (originally) RR = Race Replica

ZX..who knows? A 14R is called a ZZR over here, don't know what that stands for either.

In the GSXR range the R is for Race. Suzuki has used GS for years but again no idea.

I had a Yamaha DT250MX....(Dirt Track 250 Mono Cross)

I guess some letters actually stand for something and others are just model range/catalogue designations. JMO

"ZX"..from what I've read somewhere on the internet, stands for 'experimental'.Though we know the zx family isn't exactly experimental...it was Kawasaki's way of having a namesake standout. It makes sense actually. To me.Maybe...okay...somewhat.What the hell...it SOUNDS cool;)

'H(2)'...possibly...Hella?

NR750?? = I'm taking guesses at these so when this bike came out and the results started coming in, I used to call the bike, "Not Ready.'

CB = Citizens Bike (originally) RR = Race Replica seem correct, or city bike. I'd question citizen and use City, imo.

ZX..who knows? A 14R is called a ZZR over here, don't know what that stands for either. ZX and again, who knows, but looks like Z=big-one like the first one was Z1 as in top model. 14R is still R for race with the tree settings options for rpm limiter, rpm staging, etc. RR is euro, R is western?

In the GSXR range the R is for Race. Suzuki has used GS for years but again no idea. Same here but sounds like I've heard Grand Sport eXperimental Race.

I had a Yamaha DT250MX....(Dirt Track 250 Mono Cross)... I'm going to say, Dirt Trail 250 (take the lights off for) MotoX.

I guess some letters actually stand for something and others are just model range/catalogue designations. JMO. Yes, once the product has a long run, it's back to refinement, the demand of the public (Busa-GL) sort of following, aka, factory bread and butter bikes.

ATC - All Terrain Cycle
GL - Grand Luxury
KX - Kawi motoX
WLA - [War] [Low-compression] [A=740cc] ww2 Harley engine code letters.

Personally I think it's an acronym for "Bad Ass Muther" or maybe "Zero Xcuses"

Again, no clue but look at the range choosing letters between brands..

Z-50cc -Honda
Z-Big Balls cc

H- From a distance is the company symbol in the form of an H for Heavy In The Pants.

Z = the type ID associated with the 14R (corporate internal enumeration)
X = the variable for the incremented version number currently associated with 14R

Example Z4 = 4th version of the Z motorcycle. But instead of changing what the bike is called all the time, this will keep the brand and image in place.

When they get to double digits it will be ZXX for Z10.

Your wife really wants to know what was in the mind of an Asian gentlemen in Japan when then came up with ZX
Good luck with that....
But

Zhu Xi (ZX) has been called the second most influential thinker in Chinese history, after Confucius himself. His contributions to Chinese philosophy including his assigning special significance to the Analects, the Mencius, the Great Learning, and the Doctrine of the Mean.
So I believe it's to do with Great Learning where Kawasaki is going to school all the other manufacturers.

Where is Mrs. Troy? Lets try this for luck. The alphabet is up for grabs and so are the number combos.

Model Size = Z and/or the designation of 'top model.' History shows top model represents Z as in Z1. A year before that [was H] for the 500cc and that was about it for 2-strokes, the feds smelled the air kind of conditions.

H Size = A recognition of one model from the next. Do not be confused or someone shoot me if I'm wrong, Z is going to be the 'top model' for the everyman, because not too many can afford the Puff-H/er. The new H is a bow to the many companies of the whole [H-eavy] Industries [each] having a hand in it.

You have the locking box or the flower unfolds with that kind of Japanese art? Same locking box thing of the hidden I in the H and they lock like a puzzle box. How close am I thinking in that mindthink?

Then, the bike division as like the other big3, need a letter designation and a number to match part numbers to bikes. If you follow the group of numbers and how the big4 plot how they can tell the bike to the part number is another code system.

So in a way, look at the reverse engineering one uses Z as the biggest bore and one uses Z as the smallest bore. Z1 and Z-50 is model a designation. Someone that knows a lot of model brands or works for the industry, have to pick up what model you are working on?

Another example was honda's numbering system. First 3 numbers said it was cataloged as levers or pistons. Center 3 numbers were model. So 300 was used as a CB750 and you knew most any 300 center number was for a 750. The last 3 numbers were used for upgrades and revisions. So if the last 3 numbers were 000, then no updates to the part. A 325 center number maybe for a CB500? It's been a long time trying to remember bike part numbers.

Does that help any?

You're all wrong, but I am not going to explain it because if I did, then I wouldn't be able to feel superior.

Work in the bike industry and you'll see a pattern, guido. Then you walk up to a parts person and you know your bike but he has no clue what an avenger is? Same as saying model-t, model-a, cobra, ferrari 250 dino, etc = Trivia

Interesting input

TT was used for I think an enduro yamaha years ago. That sounded somewhat powerful/cool

The old Suzuki RM two stroke dirt bikes were the holy grail to a kid. Ahhhh, what an engine sound they had. (All the two stroke dirt bikes, for that matter, did)

And then you become a parts person or a mechanic and learn R for race M for Moto, T for track, T for trails, GS for grand sport, KX for kawi motox... Yeah, I need a bike for my part. Got a letter or a few numbers remembered? Yeah part says 808-52.

Sounds like the 8th month on the 8th day in 1952. That's a part for an old bike, because this company started in 1960-you meet the nicest squids at the parts counter, it's not your bike in this case is the place you walked into. Yeah, but I need this part for my bike. Oh, I get it now. Harley shop is down the street. This is ralph sport ralph spoil sport motors, not even close, pal.

Yeah, but cuzinnquido needs this part. That's a cuz N guido and that will never fit on your part, I mean bike. Why is that? Thefucliff I know? Now find a bridge and jump.

Kawasaki used Z1 from the 'beginning' in 1972. Z1, with minor changes through Z1A, Z1B, then it became the Z or KZ900 in '76 and the Z/KZ1000 in '77. A legend in the making.
