back firing through muffler
03/01/12 9:27 PM

I just bought a zx14 with a muzzy muffler when I let off the gas it backfires trough the muffler also occasionally I smell raw gas but find no leaks. This is a 2006 with 6000 miles should I be worried about the backfiring or is this normal for after market mufflers.

Thanks for any help

I am a very good shade tree mechanic but am very old school you know carbs and no computers. I have read up on somethings on the PC3 and understand almost none of it. So first question is it going to hurt to ride the bike until I scrape up more money or could it harm the motor. Second question can the dealer or a good mechanic reset the ecu on the bike now and which would likely be cheaper. Thank you for your reply bean07

First Off Welcome to the Forum!!!

Try Posting this in the main section not sure who else stops in to meet the new guys.

That sounds like the decel pop I used to get when I let off the throttle after nailing it on my 07!!!

I think but I'm not 100% sure but check with the Rook on this site I think he has a remedy which consists of using a wooden dowl to block off a air hose that goes to the air box.

First,

Second,
TRE-006A - $60.00
2006 & up ZX-14

Requires sub-throttle plate removal & special mapping.
Gets rid of fuel shut-off on decell -
This will allow smooth on/off throttle transitions and will get rid of the annoying pop when the throttle is reapplied.
Gets rid of part throttle timing retarder in lower gears.
Our maps are only available with a minimum purchase of $200.00 or more.

Hi and thanks for the greetings. Some things have changed. It seems that the bike has muzzy headers and exhaust and has the PC3 control ans I will find out today what kind of filter it has (stock or other). So I need to study up on the power command and then get advise about what I don't understand. Thanks for the advise and I restart this thread in the main section.
