Chain Clean 'n Lube Equals HP
06/13/14 9:06 AM

I saw the 14R chain cleaning reminder. Thanks, Cornealius.

I was reminded of an article I read in Dirt Rider, July 2014, "Refreshing a Tired Honda CRF250R", page 88.

"We simply lubed the dry chain while the bike was on the dyno. We had a a consistent increase of 0.67 HP from chain lube alone."

That is an increase of 0.67 on a 32 HP motor. That's 2.1%.

Now, Tell me where else you can get a 4 HP increase on the 14R, for pennies. (190 HP x 2.1% = 4 HP).

You guys spend, what, ~$1000.00 for a pipe upgrade, for the same HP gain?

I just told you how you can get the same gain for practically free (assuming the data scales linearly)...

I would guess that the law of diminishing returns would be at work here. The more powerful the engine, the less relevant the condition of the chain is to hp. However, race bikes DO sometimes use non-o-ring chains because they absorb less hp than an o-ring chain does. The difference is small but worthwhile.

BTW, no one recommended that I use a non-o-ring chain for street use because they need to be relubed every 15 miles or so.

Clean and fresh lube on an o-ring chain ALL THE WAY! It looks and smells sooooooo pretty + free hp! Thanks for bringing up the point, Gardner.

Yep, we have O-ring chains, the grease is sealed into the chain with the O-rings and the lube, I use wax, just keeps the O-rings from drying out and cracking. So I'm guessing the HP gain on our bikes would be way less and since we have 170 or more rear wheel HP, the percent difference might be almost inconsequential..... but that said, every little bit helps. I spray wax my chain every 300 miles with the bike on the stand, engine running and bike in first gear. It does seem to pick up a few rpm as you spray the lube on so maybe it helps a little, can't hurt that's for sure.

Chopper site has a belt drive system. Guy complains of a chirp noise after changing tire. I said that turtle keys his belt to tooth or bend down and get the soap bar out: here comes the lube you were asking where you could get that action.

I'm a wiseguy there wit the comments too. Telling me I read a jap book and I come up with the link I stink.

I like wisecracks.

Got a link for a non-participatory voyeur?

HA! The only protection is to hide the identity of the poor bike brand. It's really a beautiful POShit. They locked down my intro is tear them a new asshole from the getgogoofing there of. Guys crying to the owner/monitors. I'm still waiting for my password to be locked too.

Ok, so the problem is that if this is true, you're not going to get very far with 4 HP disappearing into your chain. 4 HP is the equivalent of almost 3000 Watts (3KW) of power that is going into your chain and not coming out at the rear sprocket. It ends up as heat and that's enough to make the thing glow a dull red in not very much time. It would likely melt the o-rings and be making a racket long before that however.

Cement = Surface
Tile = Surface
Lint free towel = The WATowelThrown like a flat stone over the surface of a lake: is the lube.

I can see 4hp gobbled up throwing the lint rag, seeing that fiber catch every crack and crevice slowing it down on the cement surface. I can then see that WATTowel flow less HP [into] that tile surface, as if lubed is that surface now. The question is, did the HP lose the WATT race with lube cooling the heat some?

WATT say ye?

Yeah, and the chain spins in the air. I think I agree w/ Rook et al. analysis (that there's not that much loss), and it spins and cools.

...but it looks and smells nice. I forget the hp increase with a non-oring chain but it was very small. I'd take it if it was practical to run on the street. I would guess a nice clean and lubed chain vs a dirty dry chain makes about as much dif as oring vs non-oring chains. Again, I'll take the advantage as long as its as easy as scrubbing down and spraying my chain every 5-600 miles.

looks so pretty to see those rollers spinning as you scrub them over with a brush doused in kerosene.
