OK to remove the evaporative system?
11/25/11 10:37 AM

Anyone removed theirs?
I have the California model. The system can get clogged with fuel and a damaged canister can cause hard starts, hesitation, etc. I've over-filled a couple times and had to blow out the fuel. Possibly damaged the canister with too much liquid fuel?
I don't know how a clogged system allows the above problems but maybe if the venting(?) is poor these things happen?
I'd rather just remove it all than buy a new canister for $100 and possibly a $60 seperator that I'm not even sure is damaged.
I'd keep the hose that allows any excess fuel to drain to the ground of course. Then I'd cap off the two ports at the throttle body. The tank should still vent well and no problems that I can see. Anything I missed?

I think this was asked by another member here.I'd say,as long as you have that 'overflow' line clear, you'd be okay. Not sure about the vent line....where that goes...or if it's the same as the overflow line. You'd have to check the manual for that one...the non-California model to see what goes where. It's in the appendix....hose and cable routing section.

I think YOUR overflow line goes to the canister...so IF you block that off(remove it from the canister inlet),you need to make sure that line is going down UNDER the sidestand area....NOT onto the pipes anywhere. It should exit just as it does on the Non-California model.

Right Grn. Thanks.
Gotta compare the Cali and non-Cali diagrams in the SM. Good idea. I suppose the over-fill line also doubles as tank venting but I'll make sure. Just don't want to remove everything and create a problem I didn't think of.
I don't really want all that stuff on the bike anyway. Never liked the idea of all those hoses. Less stuff to worry about is how I see it. I think I've read a post or two around here that said they removed it but that's all they said. No details at all. I'll try to search. I tried the Bikeland site and no one answers. I thought a big site like that would have some ideas but no.
Thanks again for taking the time.
