I got pulled over today...
11/07/12 11:49 AM

Yup, I had my wake-up call this morning, on the way to work.

I was pulled over for 10 over, and got a warning.

Nice guy, really. He told me he normally would not bother at 10 over, but he wanted to see the cycle...

Turns out, he's a '08 ZX 14 pilot, and wanted to check mine out...

We had a lo-stress converstaion, shook hands, and parted company.

My take-away is two fold:

Pilot one of these beasts, and it just a matter of time before you too have the road-side conversation, and...
I've waited long enough to wage the electronics battle. Time for me to get the detecting / warning / beating systems.

My Escort 8500 Passport has saved me thousands of dollars worth of chickenshit tickets. Why have an 186 mph motorcycle if you have to do the limit all the time?

Even 70 is fun with the 186 mph motorcycle...don't you think?;)

Yes I do think so!

Cops dont, tho...

I read a different thread about "The Pace" today. I incorporate those street riding style thoughts into the style written about in "Twist of the Wrist II", my current book read. (Gotta keep learning...)

I still think that, given the law is not going to stop their ELINT methods, then neither should I feel bad about defeating it.

I dont understand. I mean, I understand the point you've made, but you're obviously (to me) a pilot of these ZX's. With a statement that you've written, why then, do *you* own one?

I'm not desiring to be arrogant here, or to dis-respect you, that's not my intent.

I'm just curious, that's all...

If I thought 70 was fun, I'd get a Harley. Maybe when I'm 70.

I own one because I've been addicted to the power of big-bore 4 cylinder motorcyles since 1980 when I bought a practically-new Suzuki GS 1100E and let all my Z-1 riding friends try it. It's the fastest, smoothest, best-handling and best-looking of the small fraternity of large hyperbikes. I've never topped it out because I haven't been anywhere since I bought it where there's enough room to do it safely, but I've seen triple digits a multitude of times, any one of which could have shot my license in the ass and cost me big bucks. I like having more power than I really need and I like riding an understressed lump that will last longer than something that needs it's neck wrung to go reasonably fast and far. What's not to understand? If it had better wind protection, it'd be just about perfect.

I agree, why have it if your not going to twist the throtle and use the power. Besides here in phoenix you will get run over at 80 and at 120 there will always be some one going around you. The other day this 18 wheeler got all up on my ass on the freeway I was just crusing at the normal 80+ and when we went thru the down town tunnel we were hitting 130 and he was still right on my ass. This place is crazy.( I love it) When I come around on the 14 every body speeds up. Has any one else noticed that.

I kept my '08 ZX14 pretty much within 10 mph of the speed limit 80% of the time.

Which has nothing to do with getting on a 1/2 mile straight with a dotted passing line with 8 cars in front doing 5 under the speed limit, stepping it out into the oncoming lane to pass with the rpms up around 9,000 in 4th gear, blasting past all 8 in a split second, nailing 6th gear at 130 mph as I move back into my lane.

Watching the string of cars fade to little dots. Flaring to assist in slowing down to a stately +10/+15 mph over again.

Don't have to ride it fast when its stupid to ride it fast, but its certainly fun to ride it fast when there's a good reason to do so.

I used to blast down country roads as fast as I could go just for the sake of speed. No longer need to do that, but it doesn't mean I won't go WOT when its truly safe to do so, and when no chance to getting stopped by the man.

Time for me to get the detecting / warning / beating systems.

If that will prevent a ticket or a roadside inspection, you might save yourself a LOT of money.

Good news is lazar jammers seem to work very well. If you are doing triple digits and slow to 65 as soon as they lazar you, some cops might just come after you and find a reason to inspect your bike. Hven't heard of this happenning yet...just satisfied owners of lazar jammers.

Personally, I would still try to stay out of triple digits unless you are well out of sight of everyone.

Yuh, y'know, I've been thinking about this on' n' off, since Grn mentioned "no need to spend all those extree dollas"...

These systems are a bunch of money, but the user's are pretty happy with the products (radar detector, laser beaters, etc).

If it was just the cost of the ticket, maybe I would just go on the way I've been goin. (10 over is nothin' to get excited about anymore, by pratically anyone). And, there's good tips being given by all (above) about when and where triple digits are safe / justified / fun / non-ticket-able.

But, like we all know, its not just the ticket cost. It's years of reaming from the insurance power brokers.

Rook, I think it was you, some week / months ago, who wrote "If I were 80, I would not care anymore" or something like that... Unfortunately, I'm still a slave to da' man.

Detectors....I've never been in a situation where one would have saved me...not that I can think of.These radar cars...they get ya WAY far away...before ya even see em usually...And i ride around 75,80ish...90 sometimes....coming out of a curve...then...there they are...on the straight...way down there.By then,it's too late.Once they can bounce that beam off ya...yer done...detector or not.Usually,I'm decelerating as I just get back onto the straight...just for that reason...I know they won't be so apt to stop ya if you're actually slowing down 'on your own'...even if they can tell you were railin pretty good coming outta that corner. That's been my experience anyway.Here.I've gone by radar Highway patrol coming through and out of a curve at triple digits.....they never stopped me...yet.It's those straights where they seem to be aggressive in stopping guys(bikes or cars)...IDK...weird actually. They can tell if ya hit the front brakes...the nose'll dive....so maybe they figure.."okay...scared the shit outta him good....let em go...he learned his lesson"...IDK...just kinda seems that way...to me.

As far as I've known....the detector's only good as long as the radar is active....and beaming.By that time....you've been scanned I would think. It can't detect around curves,or obstructions...I've never heard of that being possible. So it's really only good for straight line running....although it 'could'(I think)detect a beam from behind...say,a following CHP.Not sure about that.CHP does have rear 'moving targets' capabilities. You can get stopped speeding coming up on a radared Trooper's car...

As far as I know...they're all 'line of sight'...which limits what they can clock(and be detected by).Which would include 'coming out of a curve'....

I seem to average 1 speeding ticket every three years. And EVERY time I have to listen to them tell me how I am a hazard and how they will be scraping me off the road soon. This has been going on for most of my 30 YEARS of riding. Sheesh!

Danno"

Your post brought back memories.I bought a brand new 1975 Z-1b when I was 19.First mistake.Quit riding for 6 years. Then a young guy kept needling me in this bar saying he heard I used to be a good rider. He had a 82 LTD1000.Kept aking me if I wanted to ride.I said no I only ride my own.So I went to the Kaw/Suz shop. They had this beautiful Blue metalic 83 GS1100E leftover.Said they take $3600.I said sold.I'm going to fry that 1000 Kaw he he.I read all the mags and the GS and the GPz1100 were it nothing else.We dragraceed at least 100 times.98-2,me.

Only time he beat me was sleeping at the lite and clutch slipping.I used to let my Z-1 friends try it.One guy wouldn't admit it saying maybe a 1/2 second.Right maybe a second.Nice bike.Next bike 83 GPz1100,nice bike too.

I'm 50/50 with Cooter. I'm with him on picking your spots to unleash the beast. Alas, in the 6 yrs I've had the 14 I have been cited well over 30 times but never paid a fine. I have Prepaid Legal!
I have also done 20 track days too so I know my bike better than most.
Unfortunately I am on a first name basis with all the state troopers in my rural county, and the Sheriffs hate Me.
Could write quite a long post on how to handle stops and how to fights tickets, but that is for another time....,

twas I...Yes I am going to go on a hellbent rampage one day when I decide to hang up my keys for good (or at least when I am getting close...I do tend to be a bit of a risk taker). The day will come when I can tell the insurance co to "kiss my ...I don't even need you for the worthless minimum coverage I have been required to carry in case I get stopped by the police."

As much as we love to do our track days (and there never will be a better, safer place to learn those skills) the highways are another environment that invites a little different speed experience that you won't have on any track. I will go freagin nuts one day when I know the worst thing to happen will be I lose my driving priviledge. But if I'm ready to let that go, who cares?? I may even just push it a step farther and keep driving after I get busted (if anyone can catch me). What will be the worst thing they are going to do to an old man like me?? "Now we're really, REALLY going to revoke your license, sir. You are a very dangerous individual." I can't tell you how worth it it would be.. I just need to drive way to much at this point in my life. ....but some day.... oh yes, some day...

So. Florida is definitely the place to own a ZX-14 and my lack of tickets is all luck because there have been a few times that I have come around a big sweeper at 150+ only to see a cop car facing me in the median so yea luck!!! And I won’t ride intoxicated!!!!!!

Yea their are still some cool ones out there. I was hauling to the track one day and passed a trooper, he did a u-turn and lit me up. I was like WTH and pulled over, he came up to the vehicle and I asked what the problem was. He said nothing just wanted to check out your bike.

In all I've been stopped when riding 4 times and only once got a ticket and that was on the dragon. Most of the time the'll talk bikes and tell you to be easy and have a good day.
