Do you give your phone # out to forum members?
04/19/16 12:21 PM

Well, I have in the past. I can think of 4 good friendships that started that way. Fredzx, Grn, Kruz, hagrid...I think that's all I've talked to on the phone from the forum we have here....except the guy I bought my Ohlins suspensions from but that's different cuz he was selling me something. Oh yeah, talked to Wolfman and Cblast a time each, too.

yeah, I'm fb friends with a couple, too. Nastynotch and bean. Some other guy too who no longer is on the forum.

So I'm just wondering when and under which circumstances do you give your ph# or email to a forum member? I don't do it anymore cuz the last dude I emailed back and forth with was sort of an unstable dickhead, at least it seemed so to me.

and I'm not mentioning names so don't even ask.

Do you give your phone # out to forum members?

Yes I do. You can sense when someone Genuinely could use a hand or just needs a break. For that person, on that subject, sometimes the internet does not fill in the blanks. Hard not to help when you know you can. If you walk away what does that make you ?

In all the years on the Forums Only once have I Regretted giving out my number. And do mean Regretted it. Wow !

Rook all I can say is Don't change who you are because of the Actions of One person. You have Helping Soul. Only Crime would be to change who you are. Plus who is going to write our tutorials Lol. Anyway starting to sound corny, romans out

Call Me lol

the last dude I emailed back and forth with was sort of an unstable dickhead, at least it seemed so to me.

Just want to clarify, this was not someone who is currently using the forum. I mean, I hope he comes back. I'm not holding any grudges ...but DAMN, what a dick! ...and he called me a lot worse in several conversations so you can see why I'm reluctant to give out my personal info again.

Rook all I can say is Don't change who you are because of the Actions of One person.

No, that's right. ...and yeah, you can sort of get an idea if someone really just needs help but LOL---this dude from last year was a guy who needed help and also was a little kooky at the same time. Well, I think we're all a little kooky but there's good kooky and sometimes there's not so good kooky. Just because we're all a bunch of kooks doesn't mean we all get along. The forum is proof of that.

For this reason I am always very cautious about sharing my personal information. I think I have purchased a few items from a couple of members, and as you know, they receive your personal info via Paypal.

Only one person from the forum have my phone number. I think I called him once and left a message, but we never connected.

Edit: I just remember that I shared my number with the organizer of the Bear Mountain Meet and Greet in New York. We have talked over the phone a couple of times. And with another forum member when I attended NYC 2013 Kawasaki Ninja Times Square Takeover.

Yup, pretty much what Romans said. To change yourself on account of one bad experience will deny yourself of all the good people you can potentially meet and help with your wisdom.

I've met many good people from here that I still talk to and ride with frequently.

It's difficult to blame someone one way or the other. Usually when these things go bad it's just one person's perspective to the other "It's his fault"-><-"It's his fault"

I say blame expectations and obligations. If you obligate yourself to helping someone then unless you've clearly defined rules before hand the only obligation and expectation that exist is for you to help that person. While you might expect someone to be respectful, nice, appreciative, etc. they are in fact under no obligation to be so where as since you said "I am capable of helping you" Obviously this is just an example but people are complex and so such relationships are complex squared.

This is what differentiates helping someone personally compared to as a business. When parties conduct business it changes because expectations and obligations are clearly defined. Even then there's some leeway on professionalism and courtesy but as long as the obligations are met that's all that really matters.

Trudat, Vic but it takes a lot for me to think someone is a dickhead. A friend who makes personal attacks is edging toward "dickhead" on the friendometer. I guess it's not the disagreement but the nature of the disagreement.

Friend is the word that sticks out to me. When you exchange personal information this means you're friends. When to other party, you're just someone who is trying to help them.

I wouldn't consider two people to be friends necessarily just because they had a couple phone conversations but if you have many phone conversations about everything, then you're friends. Either way, exchanging info or real friends, personal attacks will pretty much end whatever the relationship was. Of course people do make up but after that happens a few times, the trust is gone.

Lol Hey bud, what's happening ? Guys I was on a Asbestos removal job for 2 1/2 years. All 12hour nights, six nights a week. Like all night people I started to turn strange. See Pic

Just when I thought it was over I was put back on nights for 72hours a week Again. It's Not that I don't want to call guys back, but at 5AM who wants to talk motorcycle. And for me, after being in that fucking sweat suit for a twelve hour shift I just want to wring out my underwear, crawl under a Rock and die. Good news only two weeks left of this crap and life should return to normal. Whooo Hooo.

personal attacks will pretty much end whatever the relationship was. Of course people do make up but after that happens a few times, the trust is gone.

Second, Shouldn't happen once but ok sure it can happen. Few Times ??? To me equals write off. Just two different people. Life's to short to deal with that BS. Run Away that guy is not your friend.

I don't mind sharing my # with someone, but you can bet your ass I'm going to get to know them through other means first. That way if things go wrong, I can easily reverse that decision. So far I haven't had to do that though.

If I didn't talk to fellow gearheads once and awhile I would go mental. I'm in a house full of women. Burning gas is most definately "NOT" their passion. Can I come to your house lol

Yea, I wouldn't let that put you off on making new friends Rook. I know the guy you're talking about, unfortunate but just hit the ignore button and move on. There's always going to be a few thorns in the rose garden.

Honestly Rook, any of the "regulars", that is the guys I have been reading, and sometimes commenting on, I wouldn't have a problem giving my number or email out. From reading, I feel I have a fairly good read on the individual typing. Hell, I have been a member since late 06. I read here off and on, I admit I do not tend to post much though. Who knows why!!

Just remembered forum changed, so I guess not "here" for 10 years. Figured I would correct myself.

Oh I couldn't agree more. Anyone who posts here for a few months is someone I'd be glad to talk to. Might as well if you're communicating by forum posts already.

I've met some really good people on this forum that have turned into friends. My number is out there to them - didn't happen overnight, but you get a good feel for someone after riding a few times with them.

and I'm not mentioning names so don't even ask.

I just want to make it very clear, the person I regrettably shared my phone number with and a sht ton of emails is not a member on this forum anymore. Please don't think this person is anyone that is currently posting. The dude has removed his username from the member list so if your name is there, it's not you. I wouldn't want anyone to think I would try to make any subtle insults to them by posting this. ...and if the dickhead wants to come back, I'm not pointing him out even if i do find out who he is. What happened was not public, it was not even in PMs. It was emails so I guess I sort of take it a little personally. Too personally to ever carry over into the forum. So, I think maybe this is about as dead as this topic can get now. I don't want to go about it. This person would probably get a lot of satisfaction out of that but it's no big deal. just wondered if others had any similar experiences.

Well I'm sure there are some bad outcomes here but I have to say as many times as I've shared my number with members here I consider them all friends and they could call me anytime to ride or for help we would have to talk about hiding a dead body but other then that we are good!

So to answer the question my experience has been good!
