Windscreen Fasteners?
05/02/17 7:36 AM

Are there supposed to be rubber well nuts in the 2 lower/most forward holes? I took off the windscreen that came on my bike and noticed that only the middle and top/rear holes of the windscreen had rubber well nuts - nothing was in the other 2. It appears the 2 lower screws go through the dash cover so maybe there should be none? I looked at the parts diagram it appears there should be a nut (?) but if so where would it go?

Nope, not on gen2. The gen1 didn't have that LCD back cover with the threads, and is also why the bottom of the oem screen was blacked out and had the kawasaki label, to hide the wires. You couldn't get gen2 wellnuts in there if you tried, without breaking something....unless you took that cluster cover out I guess.

Thanks, that is what I what I thought. However, it appears there is a nut on the parts diagram for my 2014 thus the reason I asked. Regardless, it appears the holes in the dash cover are threaded so the screws worked fine with nothing else.

There are two white plastic rings that go in the screen bolt holes right there. They press into the screen.Only one way. They will get lost if you aren't paying attention when removing. They pop out of the screen.

Sounds like the ones on my bike were lost! But I used a plastic washer with the screw and it was snug so all is well. As I stated earlier there does appear to be something there on the parts diagram, which I guess is the plastic ring/sleeve.

Grn is correct, and those white plastic inserts will fit perfectly in MRA screens, but not Zero Gravity's.

I sounds like they are just a protective sleeve so the screen itself is not stressed.

The plastic washers are just to prevent scratches to fairings but I do not think scratches would be much of a problem since the bolt head is going to always be in the same place anyway. If you see something that looks like a sleeve, that is the well nut. The plastic washer is just a flat piece. I don't think you should ever tighten any well nut fasteners enough to stress the fairing. finger tight or a bit more is enough. Hand tight is too much. Enough to compress the rubber sleeve a little. The tension of the compressed rubber keeps them from vibrating loose.

Good info...but Grn n I were talking about the white eyelets that are pressed into the bottom 2 holes of the gen2 oem windscreen, because no wellnuts are used there... but rather, threads in the instrument cluster cover that the bottom 2 ws screws attach to. Different design than gen1 that didn't have a cluster cover, but instead had a blacked out portion of the ws to hide the cluster wires.

If you get something like a Puig Racing screen which has painteed lower you can remove the little cover. On my bike, it happened to be a source of a horribly annoying bodywork rattle (which was remedied before removal). Use a couple of the well nuts instaed of the two front most mount bolts going into the cover they just go into the well nuts.

I used plastic washers with the screws in the 2 lower holes so the screw never contacts the fairing. By the way, my 2014 dash is rattle free but it only has under 3k miles so time will tell!

It dfinitely wasn't every bike that had this rattle, although I seem to recall once in a while others having a similar rattle. The rattle was the top part of the cover rubbing against the ICP, and it was LOUD. I mean a persistent BUZZ especially at buzzy 4k range, like someone with a Kazoo in my ear. At that point I'd never had the windscreen off, so it definitely wasn't anything I caused. It also didn't start until I would say after a couple thousand miles. There might be a thread or some post about it, I really don't remember any more. I know I posted a thread about hunting down rattles but that's been a couple years ago. I "fixed" it, or at least did a couple things to keep the rattle from happening, but the parts no longer on the bike now anyway.

I laugh when people tell me how good Kaw's fit and finish is these days. Found a pin head sized hole in my tanks paint. A perfectly straight scratch line in the muffler finish, extremely thin and barely noticable unless you're really looking if both sides had it I would've probably figured it was a process thing. Then a run in the finish on one of the passenger peg brackets.
