ZX14 with thrown rods
12/14/14 9:02 AM

Hi everyone! I am new to this site, and am glad to be here. I have a question for you, that I know has been talked about many times, however I have not seen this exact type of question asked. My 06' ZX14 engine, has thrown two rods, and it obviously will need new engine cases (among other things) to repair it. I have found a 2013 Contours ZG14 engine case really cheap online. My question is, can I remove all of the parts from my ZX14 engine, and put them in the ZG14 cases? I am aware of most of the differences between the two engines (different head, camshafts, and output shaft, to name a few). I have done a lot of research, on parts websites, and picture comparisons, and the only difference that I see in the cases is that the ZG14 has more material surrounding the output shaft (probably due to the extra weight and stress from the shaft drive). Other than that, I see no differences. So, do you think this will work, or can be done, without any major problems? Any input would greatly be appreciated, and once again, I am glad to be here. Thank you.

Welcome

My question is, can I remove all of the parts from my ZX14 engine, and put them in the ZG14 cases?

No...

I have done a lot of research, on parts websites...

... And here is why. All black colored crank inserts.
2006 14 insert: 92028-1916
2013 Connie: 92139-0133

When I make an insert I make the metal, copper, and aluminum layers in proportion.
When I line bore a crankcase, my insert proportion is not about to be the same I add more aluminum and the rod squashes out the softer/raised layer of aluminum out of proportion? Or do I run an ever so slight change in crank mm thicknesses, that beef things up from 1352cc to 1441cc's and that proportion.

See that move on the inserts vs. line bore of that case for the crank?

Thank you for your response. Could I just purchase the inserts from a Contour, as the crankshaft between the two engines seem otherwise identical? I either need a new crank, or to get it turned anyway, so what are my options, as far as that goes?

YW. Take a deep breath. Get whatever/whoever told you the connie case works is SOL. Very simple. Look up the design of a connie crank and a 14 crank. Not only that, look up the changes made from a connie to the next connie generation. The inserts do not want to play and that says to either eat a new case/crank/rod/all new inserts or find a crashed 14 engine with a good set of cases.

A good set of cases reads like this. There are no crankshaft covers that were laid down on. Especially the dyno cover side, where the cover shows damage and that bangs the crank's nose and bends the end.

So the bottom line is, no connie cases, just the same 14 gen cases.
Find a used engine out of a crashed bike. Build one engine out of both parts, being the least mileage parts transfers to the rebuilt engine.

The rods and crank journals will have to be cross-referenced so they don't spit out the case again.

Wow, I see, I was not aware of all of that. Thank you very much for taking the time to go into so much detail. I will look around for a case from the ZX, as you said. After all I have learned from you, It is obviously my only option. Thanks again! Case closed.

Or you could look for a low mile used engine and just plop it in there and be done with it.

Either way, good luck!
