Spooned on new rubber
09/04/10 8:08 PM

Put on a new set of tires today. I've run nothing but michelin for the last few years and have never really been a dunlop fan. Today a friend called a said they were running a Labor day sale on tires and I could pick up a set of the new Q2's for $195, so I went and picked up a set and put them on. This afternoon we went out fro a 2 up ride to scrub them in and have to say I am highly impressed.

First thing I noticed was the profile, it's a nice round profile with a long shoulder ( I'm not sure if I will even be able to take advantage of all the tire with the 14, I'll have to find out)

Very little tread cuts and alot of rubber

The tires are taller raising the 14 about a 1/4 of an inch over the road2's, this is a good thing for 2 reasons 1. it allows a little more lean angle and 2. it quickens the 14 up for corner to corner transitions in the tight stuff.

Took about 50 miles to scrub them in and let me get used to the handling after that it was on.

It took very little effort to initiate the turn in and no effort to maintain it, infact it kept wanting to tip in deeper. With these tires the throttle is your friend. They held the chosen line perfectly and mid corner adjustments were a breeze. They are very confidence inspiring, they always feel like they a gripping well.

With only 50 miles on the tires I was able to easily hit some of the tighter roads at what was a fast pace with the michelins so with a little more adjustment time I'll be able to run a faster pace with these.

I also noticed that they put down a larger contact patch and that allows plenty of throttle when cornering, I only had the rear spin up once and that was intentional so I could find their threshold. They provide excellent feed back front and rear (you can always tell what the tires are doing}.

They warm up quick and hold the heat well without overheating. I ran 42 rear and 38 front (I may play with these pressures a little just to see but I think I'm pretty close on these)

All in all I'm impressed and if they provide 3000 miles or more I'll be putting them on the next time. Only miles will tell now. Hitting some tight fast stuff tommorrow and see how deep I can go on these things.

Are the front and back a higher tire? The way you describe the set, it sounds like you are talking about a 190/55 rear with the normal sized front.

The front and rear are taller and it's a 190/50 rear

I thought all 190/50 tires were the same height--45mm from bead to top of tread. So if you had a 190/50 Road2 on there before, that should be the same height as the new tire....no?

Um no, tire profile plays a big part in overall diameter. Prime example

Dunlop qualifier (190/50)- overall diameter is 24.81, width is 7.69

Dunlop Q2 (190/50)- overall diameter is 24.95, width is 7.54

Dunlop roadsmart (190/50)- overall diameter is 24.76, width is 7.52

Dunlop D616 (190/50)- overall diameter is 24.71, width is 7.60

so even though they are both a 190/50 the Q2 is actually taller than the qualifer and not as wide. And with the roadsmart the Q2's are taller and wider even though they are both a 190/50 series tire. This is the same for all tires.

So far so good. 600 miles and I really like the way these feel. Still have to see what kind of mileage

You may have a hard time to get completely rid of the chicken strips on the Q2's, as the ZX-14 hardware will start scraping the road before you get there.

Yea thats what I told the wife when I first saw them. Alot of rollover to the shoulder. Thats ok though just means I want run out of tire. Less lean angle means more contact patch and better traction = on the throttle earlier and harder exiting corners.

The Q2's I've found really like you to be on the throttle to really be settled and feel rock solid. I like that though, thats my riding style.

Love them, so far I have right at 2k on them and they look good. No squaring off and a good even wear pattern. Grip is still excellent even on wet pavement. They like higher pressures and they may be whats helping with the wear and mileage. I'm running 42 rear and 38 front that allowas them to warm up quick and get good and warm but not too hot.

The handling is different and takes a few miles to get adjusted to but after that they are like being on a rail.

2500 miles so far and I like them. I'll probably only get another 500 out of the rear and the front is still good to go. The rear hasn't squared off and worn evenly all the way across the rear. Even after being worn down they still have plenty of grip.

Just came back from the first ride on a brand new set of Dunlop Q2's (120/70 front and 190/55 rear).
So far so good. Cornering is fantastic! I'd scrubbed the chicken strips before I even knocked the whiskers off of them. ... and the large contact patch, when leaned over, did a great job of minimizing wheel spin even when hard on the throttle, and above 7000rpms, coming out of the apex. My only complaint, if you wanna call it that, is that the rear was "stepping out" more, under heavy engine breaking, than with my previous set of bt016's (same size). However, I also just went from 16/42 to 16/44 gearing and therefore was downshifting with the rpms a little higher than normal... I may have just found my new favorite, "affordable", tires for the Big Ninja!

You may have a hard time to get completely rid of the chicken strips on the Q2's, as the ZX-14 hardware will start scraping the road before you get there.

DISCLAIMER: No hardware was damaged during the making of this photo.
