The new guy

Hello everyone,

Just recently acquired a 2006 zx14 and I am loving it. I am a new rider and this is my first bike. I have been riding it for a couple of weeks everyday just about and the more comfortable I have been getting with the bike the more I have been opening it up. That's when I have noticed that around 8-9k Rpms when I would believe is getting right into the power band the power just kinda falls flat and climbs slower up to 11k. I normal end up shifting around 10k just because it feels like the bike picks up a lot faster when I shift to the next gear which just repeats the same process. Other than that issue it has been a great riding bike. It has a pc3, sprocket kit, 4-2-1 header with straight pipe and lowered. I will be taking it by a local shop at the end of the month for a valve adjustment and plugs changed. I have changed the oil, flushed brake lines with new dot 4, and flushed and replaced coolant. Hope to learn a lot reading up around here.

The very top revs do not always make more hp. Mapping can change that somewhat but I remeber seeing the Gen1 peak at about 9.5k to 10k rpm and then start to drop off up to redline. That is evident by viewing a dyno chart but I must say, I don't feel it when I ride my 08. If I rev that high, I pass 9.5 so fast, I might hit the rev limiter befor I can shift. First I would try a different map and see if that changes anything. You don't want to go without max power because that's what the 14 is all about.

The engine should rev to redline easily through all 6 gears. 14s aren't quick revvers, more like power pushers.
I've never ridden Gen 1, but watching videos on youtube of them topping out it's really no different that I see my bike doing.

Your bike should perform very similar to this. If not it might be there's something wrong. The list of possibilities could be many. Valve clearance, poor map, compression, throttle position, throttle body sync, spark plugs, air filter, etc.

Good idea, Vic--a video. I'm sure you will find better vids of 14s doing WOT redlines with the tachometer showing but here's a couple of mine that I think have pretty good sound even if you don't see the tach the whole time.

This was definitely WOT--check out 2:06

and the first segment of this one which was not WOT but close. No tach but good sound.

If you feel it's lacking power on top, I doubt if it is because of the normal power curve of the 14 which tapers off a couple thousand rpm before the rev limiter. The bike is still making good power on top; jut not increasing as much as it does lower. The stock exhaust makes the upper revs feel resticted but sounds like you have that covered.

Rook are you sure in yur first video it's WOT? It looks like might be WOT in your final gear (not sure 5th or 6th) but in lower gears doesn't look like your WOT.

BTW the video I posted wasn't mine. Just one I found on youtube. I'm sure Gen 2s are a little quicker than Gen 1s, but it's amazing how little difference 30 hp really makes. Gen 1s have no problem pushing to redline in 6th.

You know it makes sense really given results of some testing we've seen!

Thanks chrly. The second vid is from several years ago when I went fast anywhere and everywhere I wanted. Got a few warnings and finally got busted bad. I don't do much over the speed limit on the interstate anymore which is sad because that is the safest place to go really fast.

No. I remember not wanting to take any chances stressing anything in the lower gears so I did not Go to WOT or close to redline until 5th and 6th gears.

Gen 1s have no problem pushing to redline in 6th.

I could hit the rev limiter in 6th with my 45 t rear sprocket at about 170 mph indicated. I think with the stock gearing, the bike will hit the top speed limiter at 186 before it hits the rev limiter. I believe it will hit the TSL at 186 in 5th gear without touching the rev limiter too. Must be close though.

Hey guys. Appericate the quick response. Sorry mine has been alittle delayed. I have been working almost everyday and some crazy hours.

Anyways I own a few gopros and went out that next day to make a video of what I was talking about with the rpms. Sadly the gopro on my helmet is not close enough to really see what was going on. What I did notice while experimenting with this issue is that around 8500 to 9k when the rpms climbing slowes way down, is that if I let off the throttle just a bit the bike will pick right back up and finish climbing through the power band.
I want to try and load a tune on the pc3 for the type of mods on the bike but really can't find anything on the PC page. Is there a tune library anywhere I could search through?

What kind of places do you live?? Here is Silicon Valley, I rarely rev my engine to that high. Every once in a while, I go up to 9000rpm but can't go beyond that - I need to keep my license or am I missing anything?

Anyway welcome to the club!

I live below savannah GA. We have noting but long back roads.
I went on my first long ride today, 3 hours to a car meet/dyno shoot out and 3 hours back.
I rode with my buddy who has a busa, by no means was I even close to be able to keep up with him
When he would rip on it. He has exhaust and a few other things, nothing crazy. But definitely shows
A difference from where the bike should be. We are gonna load a new tune in the pc3 tomorrow and see what happens.
