Cold weather/smooth shifting
11/11/09 6:51 PM

Anyone out there riding in 40 degree weather notice the bike shifting a lot smoother? I've been noticing the last few days that I never feel a hard click in the shift lever anymore, not even from 2 to 1. I was wondering if the new exhaust could have anything to do with it but I don't see how it would. I'm almost certain I noticed the same thing when the weather started getting cold last year.

More than likely Rook your oil is thicker in the 40 degree temp's. Makes your transmission feel like it is shifting smoother.

No, the long johns do the trick for me. The only thing that gets cold is my pinkies unless I wear my snowmobile gloves which I don't care for so much. The air coming in the helmet gets a bit chilly at highway speed. Now where is my baklava -- balaclava?

So it's thicker oil that feels smoother, makes sense but if it feels smoother then it is smoother, right Phil? I mean less ware on the gears? But I suppose more ware on the engine until it warms up.

Yep, that's the trade off. Remember the MAJORITY of engine wear happens at/during cold starts.
