Full Service
08/20/15 2:55 AM

My 09 just rolled past 16 thou mi. Mostly commute miles with a few weekend jaunts. Local dealer sez time for full service w/valve adj. Dealer fee around $800. How important is this? Can I push to 20,000 or 25,000 or more before valve adj? It wouldn't be so bad if it was $300 or $400 for scheduled service, but $800 puts the hurt on my wallet.
It that a reasonable fee?

I wouldn't sweat it. I've got almost 40,000 on my Connie and haven't had the valve cover off yet.
I did pull and clean the air filter today though.

On my 07...I went 24K miles before checking the valves. When I did...they were ALL in spec...not even close to being off.I'm not advising you wait till then...every bike is different.

I have at least 35k on my '06 and valves have not been looked at yet. No obvious problems. Clutch replacement, valves and maybe some power adders planned for this Winter.

As GRN said, not saying not to do it, but........

I had my valves checked at the appropriate service interval.
All in spec.
Costly but peace of mind.
I dont think I have ever heard of anyone getting a 14's valves checked and having an adjustment requirement.
But thats obviously not to say it doesnt happen.
Its probably a low risk gamble not getting them done but the cost is huge if you are one of the unlucky ones...

I'm surprised at the cost. $800 seems high for a valve *check*.

Ask them if the cost is lower if there is no *adjustment*.

The price is appropriate if they have to adjust. Most wont do it, even if you ask them to adjust if they're (even ust one) close to the spec limit. That is, "No touch-ee if in spec".

I had mine checked at 16K, all in spec. One exhaust close to out of spec.

$400 bill for the check.

I had "requested strongly" that they adjust if even one was close to being out. That is, my expectation was to not hear that they buttoned it back up with that one value close to out of spec. I was ready to pay, too. But, they ignored me.

<Sigh> I get that alot :)
