Fueling issue (solved)
03/28/17 6:45 PM

About a year ago, I started a thread about my fueling problems which came on after about 5 minutes of riding. When opening throttle, the engine would bog then surge again. Very frustrating and dangerous situation as I almost lost control on one occasion. Thought that my external pump was clogged or getting very hot. After cleaning the pump, the problem seemed to subside, but returned again.

Two pumps later, the issues continued. Although new pumps seemed to be able to suck the fuel from the tank better than the old. External fuel pumps can suck to an extent, but are designed to push the fuel. I also heard strange sounds from the fuel pump, which sounded like it was clogged. So after much reading, spending, and countless hours trying many options, I decided to alter my gas feed nipple to something larger. So had to drain the fuel first and as I opened up the nipple, gas came out with some force, but after a few minutes it was a dribble and I had found my problem.

Tank off, I opened up my fuel sending unit and got rid of the plastic parts left over from intank pump that were obstructing flow. Test rode for about 20 minutes and bike is fueling properly. Pump sounds whisper quiet and produces as much pressure as I set the regulator to. Actually the fuel gauge registers close to 100 psi on WOT, but before it would drop to 0, so I'm not complaining.

Now when I think back, the guy who sold me the turbo, told me he blew the motor because he was not paying attention to fuel pressure and he thought the fuel pump had failed to do the job. Now I know what caused his/my problems. I wrote this update b/c my bike is part of me, so when its broken then I'm broken. Hope this helps someone out there.

So this was probably the reason the OEM pump was not working?

The OEM pump was removed when I got the parts with the turbo, but the structure that held it in place was still present so I installed thinking everything was ok. It worked good for about 1 year and then I started getting intermittent problems. The fuel sending unit was modified by the previous owner, to include a fuel return nipple. It looked nothing like OEM. The turbo requires a high pressure, high flow pump which OEM pump cant handle. Romans has an in tank high pressure pump, but mine came with external.

After reading too much info on fuel pumps, there are people who use two fuel pumps on their vehicles. Last year, I installed a AEM monster pump (good for 380 liters per hour and meant for 8 liter drag motors) out of frustration, but it failed to suck fuel from a plugged up nipple. The nipple resided in a plastic casing (which I now discarded) that allowed fuel in, but not at the rate my pump required. If only I could go back in time and correct this dilemma when I first installed the turbo. So much money and time, but you never know what you get when buying modified components.

Cant tell you how many times I have thought about people that buy an unmodified motorcycle and just ride it. They are lucky. Glad that the bike is running, it is easy to break things the more you work on them.
