HID Headlights Glitch
06/06/15 6:09 PM

The previous owner of my 2009 ZX-14 installed HID headlights. Two of the indicator lights: the neutral light and oil warning light flicker and sometimes stay on while I'm riding (or even just idling).

Some of the wiring for the HIDs is accessible under the instrument cluster and when I reach down there and put a little tension on the wires, the indicator lights stop flickering.

I am wondering if 1) anyone has seen this before? and 2) anyone have any thoughts on why this is happening?

My own theory is that he tapped into the indicator wires to power either the relay for the HIDs or the HIDs themselves. And now they are shorting the indicator lights and making them flicker. I'm not familiar with HID installation, never had them before.

I've tried (albeit, a half-assed try) to get at the connections but it looks like I'm gonna have to take the whole front cluster/plastics/everything off to get at the connections. (Anyone have a link to a good guide for dismantling the front fairing and cluster?)

Remove windscreen. You'll see I think it's two screws or small bolts there(may have to remove the mirror stay bracket as well)(with tipover switch).Remove cluster. You MAY be able to see where that wiring is going just looking in there before you remove the cluster.I should say...unplug connector on cluster(it's at the bottom right or left side there). Then remove. You'll see how it is when you open that area up.You do NOT have to remove the upper fairing.Maybe those mirrors to get the stay outta there.

When you get the cluster free...DO NOT set it on it's face.face up where ever you set it down.Out of direct sunlight as well.

Use care when retightening that cluster.DO NOT over crank on those bolts(or screws). They will pull out the plastic fitting on the cluster.

If you do have to remove the tipover switch(you may just be able to unplug it)...cycle the key once to reset it.Your bike should fire fine then.

So I took the front end apart to see what's going on. He didn't tap into anything from the console. In fact, the whole HID setup is installed right off the headlight plug... pretty nice engineering.

Anyway, I did notice that the wire I would press on to stop the flickering was run right over the cluster wiring harness and putting a strain on it (it seems). There is one plug with over a dozen wires going into the cluster. This harness has not been messed with. I rerouted all the HID wiring so it's nowhere near the cluster wiring harness.

I have to put the bike back together I take it for a test ride to see if that's all it was. I took it apart by the book, so I started at the bottom and took all the plastics off. Ugg.

RE: HID Headlights Glitch [SOLVED]

Update: After relocating the HID wires to the lower sides of the fairings (near the blinkers) (and after figuring out that the HID power wires needed to be reconnected with polarity switched) I have solved the problem, no more flicker!

Somehow just having the HID power wires cross over the cluster wiring harness was enough to make them flicker. I have no idea why pressing further down on the wires made the flicker stop.

So, yay.
