Newbie Temperature Question
09/19/15 4:48 AM

Hey Everyone,

Not a big deal, this is more just because I am new to the bike. It's a brand new ZX-14R just run in now. I'm just wondering what the normal range of temperatures is when riding?

The reason for asking is that I am comfortable with the upper end of the scale, it seems the fan cuts in at about 95ºC with the temp rarely exceeding 97º at least while the weather is still cool. The fan seems to pull it nicely back down to around 92º

My question is about the other end of the spectrum. On the motorway this evening, the dash told me the air temperature was 17º and at 100kph the engine running temperature dropped down to 69º

Is this a little too cool? I know too cool can be as bad as too hot.

Thanks in advance.

That's normal for me to, in winter I get down to 64/65 deg Celsius running temp if it's around 0-5 deg Celsius outside. In summer it will average around 75-83 deg normal riding in 25 deg + outside temp, but standing at an intersection she will go up to 95-97 but as soon as I pull off it drops down again.

High 60's is what I see at the speeds and ambient temps you state. In winter with air temps below 10 deg C it'll run low 60's. At a standstill the temp climbs rapidly to 95 deg+ when the fan cuts in. The twin fans pull the temps down pretty quick unless you're sat in the garage with the engine running when it takes a while to get down to sub 90 deg when the fans cut out. Anywhere in the 60 deg + range is hot enough IMO. don't forget the temp gauge shows coolant temp. The oil temp will be higher.

Cool, good to know it's all normal. It runs a lot cooler on average than my Blackbird used to, but then again it's an evolution in motorcycling, not surprising the cooling has improved as well.

Cheers for the reassurance.

In winter mine runs at 65. That just happens to be the thermostat opening temperature. When riding at speed even in hot weather it remains quite cool. The temperature only goes up when in stop start traffic and usually cycles between 90 and 95. On a 42 degree day it got up to 102 but easily cooled down once moving. What ever you do, never use a Cox radiator guard. It blocks the radiator too much and even on a 20 degree day the cooling fans will struggle to bring down the temp.

Sounds normal from my 9 months experience on the bike in Aussie conditions!

I live in the tropics (the Philippines, to be exact) and even in the summer, the temp doesn't get too hot (rarely goes over 97ish). Even with a Cox radiator guard attached.

Up in the mountain roads of Luzon (elevation from 5000 to 7500 feet) with temps around 15C, bike stays around 65 - 75C, in my experience.

Had to show my flatmate the way through peak hour traffic yesterday afternoon so she could drop my car off for service then bring her back home.

Temp sat between 95º and 97º most of the time, with the fan doing about 50% duty cycle. It sure knocks the voltage around when it comes on. It idles on about 14.2V with the fan off and goes down to 13.5V with the fan on at idle.

Not much of a way to treat a ZX-14R I know :-(

It had its first ever roll on to 9K RPM on the way home though, that was fun ...

Yup, 62 - 64 ..... coming into summer it, I think it will be a while before I see those numbers again once she's warmed up. On a decent day here, she's at 53 by the time I get my gloves on and start riding ;-)
