New 2010 14, Have a question...
03/08/12 5:29 PM

I just got a 2010 Zx-14 with only about 700 miles on it and it's doing something I have never experienced before. My last bike was a CBR1100XX so I am used to big sportbikes but I'm kinda puzzled with starting this thing. When I crank it after it sitting for a while it will sometimes crank a couple times and then the starter will stop and the electronics will reset. I have to push the starter again but the second time it will start every time. This has only happened after the bike sits for a while and not always even then. IF it does happen it will go away after the bike is warmed up. Would you think this is just a little 14 "tick" caused by the high compression of the motor or should I have it looked at in the shop? Any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds like a low battery to me... and would not be surprising for a 2 year old bike with only 700 miles... Might be that there is a lithium battery installed. Have you checked? Is not a normal "tick" for a zx14.

I also have a 2010 and 2700 miles on it bought it leftover spring 2011. I was having slow cranking issues when I let it sit for a couple weeks. I bought a battery tender to trickle charge over the winter. To my surprise when I removed my battery I had an old battery out of a 2006 ZX14 Cycle Tron II battery. Not even a factory battery. Had tape with all the info from the bike it came out of. Might want to check yours. I called the dealership and they could`nt believe it also.... they ordered me a brand new one and it cranks alot faster than the old one.

Cool. Glad you got that taken care of ASAP.

I would recommend going with a Shorai or what ever other small light battery they are making in a couple years. My stocker lasted about 3 years.

Definitely NOT a "normal" thing... I have the same year model as you, bought new in 2010, no problems with old battery when I replaced it with a Shorai at 3200ish miles and no problems with the Shorai up to it's current 5030 miles. As long as it's properly charged. I agree with the others - replace the battery.
