How Heavy is your 14?
11/30/11 10:42 PM

Have any of you weighed your pre-2012 ZX14's? Just picked got my 400lb shipping scale in the mail from Amazon and used it to weigh my bike as it is and also my stock exhaust system... the stock exhaust system (headers/cans) weighed in at a tad over 39.90 LBS!!! The bike weighed only (only) 502.7 lbs in it's current config with 1/3 tank of fuel! So a little over 55 lbs from the stock advertised weight of 558 lbs (566 lbs - taken from the Kawi website) adjusted for approx 1/3 tank of fuel! I assume that the Shorai made up for most of the rest of the weight loss as it weighs only 1.61 lbs to the stockers 10.90 lbs... And I wasn't even shooting for weight loss, just looks!

That sounds about right. without stock exhaust, battery and wheels.

STOCK BIKE:

566.7 lbs. (Wet)

Gert rid of some of that useless plastic and rubber plate and you can drop another 5 lbs. The mirrors are about 2 lbs.

yu gotta get rid of that belly pan and steel frame. That there is about 5 lbs. After market tank cap and side stand will save about a lb and get a aircraft alum bracket for the exhaust drop the p[assenger pegs.

I actually got it to below 500 pounds by losing the Corbin and putting the stocker back on - the Corbin (12.2lbs) is actually almost twice as heavy as the stock seat (6.7lbs)!! But since I do most of my riding with the Corbin, I left it on there to weigh it... Like I said, I was going for looks alone, but the weight loss is a HUGE plus as it is! I'm not a track rider, so I'm not looking to squeeze every last ounce of useless weight off. Maybe I'll be looking to do that on the new one!

I never made a change to mine with concern for the effect it had on weight.

Every change I made was to allow me to sport tour better, longer, farther.

I think she is a little under stock weight, but thats just a guess. She goes like a bat out of hell, handles like a dream, and hauls enough luggage for week-long trips. Plus all the other amenities.

Since she will never get any closer to a track than going to watch a race, I never had any interest in shedding a pound just to shed a pound.

I have been wanting to get a weight on my bike as well, but how accurate is the actual weight when taken one wheel at a time? I know it would be close, but I kind of question that method. There is a moving company near me that I used for measuring the weight of my lightning, and cars, but it is accurate to +-10 lbs. I would like to get a little closer than that on a 500+ lb. bike. I think the amount used for gas is about 7 lbs. per gallon (could be wrong).

Weighing like this is very accurate. No matter how you do it each wheel supports only a certain amount of the total vehicles weight. Same concept as scaling a big rig - we do it one axle (or set of axles) at a time. Even when the Highway Patrol brings out the portable digital units they use for roadside scaling (which also are calibrated regularly and cost a hell of a lot more then the one I'm using) when they think you're running overweight, they still do it one axle at a time. Kinda hard to find scales large enough to weigh 80+ foot long vehicles unless purpose built and even the scales at truck stops are separated into three segments in order to give you three separate axle weights.

Oh- by the by, truck scales are accurate enough to detect 1 or 2 lbs changes from axle to axle when you move product from one end of the trailer to the other.

Right Priv - I only bought the scale because I want to weigh the stock set up on the new bird when I pick it up later on next year... But since I have the scale now, I was curious as to how much the stock Gen1/2 exhaust and other parts weigh... I didn't make changes to my current ride based upon weight loss etc., as you could prob tell by my wheels, I was going for looks more than anything, I was just surprised by how much weight was actually shed!

I'd have to agree with, BW. If I had two identical scales, one on each wheel, would not that be equal weight off one end? Say, there is one scale now. One side would feel all that weight going back to say for argument sake, half way. If we scale the other wheel, would not that half-way-point stop there? Then pick up after it left off with the scale to the other end?

That is how I see the weight distribution concept using one scale. I could be 180° wrong, but it walks too well not to think it has that (+/-) percentage window of weight somewhere too. Oh, you want to find out accurately how much the bike weighs dry? Get a pounds/ounce/grams scale so you can weight each piece of the puzzle. That is the only weigh.

And even though BW used the stands, it was still sitting on the ground as it were. I see no difference, other than if one stand was used alone, then yes, that works in a variable we be arguing a few grams or ounces, no? I could be wrong.

I know someone has been in the Chair Force? Ever seen the folks that build cargo pallets weigh rolling stock? They do the same thing, but actually weigh each ground contact point of the vehicle, then run that thru a formula to determine the center of balance of the vehicle - dead on accurate to make sure the load plan for the plane is on point...

Like I said when you weigh one end then the other, your accounting for all of the weight of the vehicle or object, the same as the tires' contact patch are holding that same weight while riding... there's no mystery missing weight floating somewhere not being accounted for... All weight HAS to rest on ONE of the contact patches from one side or the other of the exact center of mass, no matter what...

WOW. Thanks for saving me $500. That's a shame because it is a great looking seat. I'd be more likely to buy and mod a few stock seats off of owners who dug deep to buy a Corbin.

Get a pounds/ounce/grams scale so you can weight each piece of the puzzle. That is the only weigh.
The one wheel/time method is how most of us would weigh a bike. I am very skeptical as to the precision of ANY scale that measures up to and over 500 lbs. +-10 lbs is to be expected. I would say the smaller the range of the scale, the more accurate it will be. Also the closer you get to the middle of the range the more accurate the reading is.

It's like a dyno. One will be different from the next. It just gives you a good idea.

Ditto that Rook - If I had known the difference before buying it and was going for weight reduction, I wouldn't have gotten the Corbin, but as it is the Corbin's comfort outweighs the weight gain!!!! So I'll still use it!
