License Revoked?
02/12/15 12:17 PM

It occured to me how easy it would be to get tagged for doing well in excess of 100 on this bike. Numerous youtube vids confirm I'm obviously not alone. So what's the stakes here? I've heard anything over 100 is directly to jail and who knows how many points but is there anything for an automatic license revoked?

Isn't it depending upon which state you live?

OldMan is right, depends on what state you live in but it might depend on whether the officer "got any" the night before. Here in the US mostly going 50 over will get you a Reckless Driving ticket, a BUNCH of points on your license, a wallet cleaning fine, and a big jump in insurance premiums. I think I can pretty much say we ALL want to avoid the hit to our record and our wallet.

Rkt it seems to me these days Indiana LEO are pretty cool at least up around here. I'm sure if I was zipping by one at 50+ over I wouldn't expect a pass. But for the most part they don't seem overly interested in traffic law enforcement these days. I think it was a few years ago FWPD got rid of their "traffic" specific division even.

Any thoughts on this area compared to other places you've lived and traffic enforcement?

I was busted for 110 in a 65. The offense was 26mph+ over the legal limit. 6 points. 15 day suspension of drivers license. Ticket was about $260 if I recall. Traffic lawyer was $700 and he got me nothing. The prosecuter just said NO. Too much of a public safety risk. We don't accept your request to pay the fine as ticketed but make it a 4 pointer. The judge just raised his eyebrows and frowned when he was told I was doing 110. All in all, I think it was worth the 200 mile trip to be at the hearing and the thousand bucks I paid. Apparently they didn't tell my insurance company because I got no insurance hike at all. I'm very thankful for that because that doesn't go away like points or a suspended license. This is how they do it on WI. I've heard other places are tougher. Might also depend on how the officer treats you. I could have gotten reckless driving or 45 over. I'm pretty sure I was doing at least 120 for a short time. He might have had that on his radar memory and just picked the lower speed.

Don't go fast on the interstate. If you do it, do it out in the sticks where no one will see. You're more likely to get off if it's just you and the officer too. They don't want to let anyone go if 50 other people saw you doing that kind of speed. Could be the cops job on the line if someone complains.

I don't ride like I used to after my big ticket. I pick my times and my places and I get it done in 20 seconds or less.

As I briefly mentioned before, a lot is the attitude of the officer, where the incident occured and how cooperative the rider is. I have read that many departments, as you mentioned about FW, have eliminated their traffic specific officer in order to save money. South Carolina HP were generally pretty cool about most things, the Myrtle Beach officer were tough on bikes for ANY infractions, due mostly I think to the "biker week" crap they had to deal with. Oklahoma HP officers were pretty good as long as you were respectful and weren't endangering anyone. Never got stopped when I live in California, just lucky there!!!

Rook I know the pain, my first ticket was reckless driving back in '92. Fine was over $400, and 8 points on my license, mandatory defensive driving. It was probably in the first couple months I had my license doing like 35 over. In my Camaro...wasn't getting any break right?

My kid just got his first ticket, doing 83 in a 55 zone. $480 bucks, he did traffic school which was some more money. And he did this in a car...Loser!

Between the crazy overkill DUI bullshit and just the overall law enforcement attitude sticking it to drivers, I drive in fear. I will not even have a beer when I go out with my wife for dinner. You just never know. Having this bike now causes me to be worried as hell because it is just so fast and easy to speed. My advice to anyone is never ever assume you will get any break when speeding. The cops nowadays are looking for that arrest and credit for a good arrest. I have used very careful times and have scoped out spots that I can get on it (similar to my cars when I was younger) but it really sucks to have so much speed and not really be able to use it without disregarding the law and our safety and others. My wife and I have actually had discussions because she knows my love of speed. I am going to buy a high quality radar/laser detector at least and be very careful. Things have changed to a police state like mentality. We are fucked if we get caught going 100+. It kind of ruins the fun of the bike.

, Rook gets nailed for 110, and really, at 100-110, she is just stretching her legs. Preaching to the choir, I know. Alas.

When I do over 100 it is for a very short length of time. Just enough to hit the speed I'm after and then I'm off the gas.

That fall when I got busted, I had been cruising at 90 mph for the whole season and routinely hitting 110-130 almost every ride. I even got stopped a couple times and given a warning. I narrowly escaped being pursued by police for racing two times. I should have read the signs better. You can't run around like that any old time you want.

Well where I live here I. Northern California over the hill from mad.. they changed the speeding laws here a few year's back. Anything over the posted speed limit is considered excessive speed. Regafdless if the oficer writes you up for 5 or 10 over doesn't matter when the tickets come or you go to court. You get max fine. Anything over 100 + is considered reckless driving, you get lisence restrictions and points added to you licence and fines. Impond is upto the police officer. Depending on how he see's or feels...

I'm with polishedmetal, get a radar detector (there's a seperate thread to agrue about that) scout ahead and blow out the carbon where it not only safer for others, but you as well. Seems a cop would be far less likely to throw the book at you out in the sticks vs on a crowded freeway. There's so many vids on youtube of guys going over 150 for extended periods of time, to me that's like having a sign on the top of the car that lights up when you're intoxicated. You know, like what the pizza hut delivery guy who turns on the sign when he's working? lol

Agreed, although it's risky to ever run up to triple digits sustaining that is what really adds some risks. When I got my 35 over in the Camaro, I was just barreling down the road at that speed like an idiot (I was 16...I was an idiot).

Besides lets face facts. Riding at 180 mph is one thing. But the fun is really the acceleration. Once accelerating is over it's not much different than somewhere between 120 and 150. I say this because with my old bike I topped it out once at 150 (speedo read more) and hit 130-140+ a few times. After a while I realized there wasn't a perceivable difference over 120 so I kind of limited myself to that.

Granted top end on that bike and this bike are galaxies apart. It took a while to get it to 150, longer than it takes a 14R to top out for sure. So this was bad from a getting busted POV, as the 14R can basically get up to it's max under a mile and my old bike probably took a mile to top out.

Guys - and I know Rook does this - go to the track 3-4 times a year .... wtf. its safe, no cops, clean runoffs and you get to go faster than shit all day long. I hit 150-160 on my '06 every lap, all day long, every lap. Really looking forward to the end of April, 1st track day at Auto Club Speedway with the new BBW, wonder if I can break 160 on the '14 14R? All day long, every lap.

Did I mention 150 to 160 every lap, all day long?

When I'm on the street its all about mph, ~ 5 over is all I will ever do after I had to crap out $3k for a Lawyer to keep my ass out of jail for 114 in a 55 on Angeles Crest Highway.

Just keep it safe.

For me, going to the track only made me want to go fast all the time. It's a dopamine thing.

But all the tracks around here are lame.

Cruderudy, could you explain a little more on that 114 in a 55 situation? Stuff like that is what I'm interested in.

Super Ticket Lawyer and I got really really lucky.

They kept requesting suppeanas of different records and documents until the DA did not comply, when the Lawyer, DA and Cop showed up at court without providing the records it was over. Turns out the DA has to comply within a certain amount of time and did not. Judge dismissed the case - used up all of my speeding luck for the rest of my life. Even the Lawyer was surprised.

I actually got the lawyer because there was a very good chance the DA could up the charge and hit me with criminal misdemeanor reckless driving.

Yeah it's a dangerous game for some of us. I'm more like this that my level of aggression isn't soothed but increases. Fortunately I understand this about myself these days. Still I think track days would be fun to do.

The nearest track, Mid-Ohio, is 152 miles away. Don't even know if they have track days/motorcycles. Putman Park has 2 or 3 motorcycle track days a year, 165 miles away. I'm thinking about trying to go to one.

Yeah Road America is where the regionally sanctioned racing had their finals every year back in the day. Had a couple friends that went down there a couple years.
