new chain
02/04/14 4:28 PM

Alright guys, I'm about to purchase a new chain to stretch the bike a little bit. I've been looking and looking but can't decide which way to go. Any recomendations? I believe that I'll need a 150 length. I can get a D.I.D. from the local shop for $200.00. Not bad I guess. Anyway, any info would be appreciated. Thanks

EK ZZZ is all I have had except the stocker. I've had the EK on there for about 20K miles and I almost never had to adjust it until recently when I changed a rear sprocket. I believ it was the sprocket that wore to the chain and not vice versa. I really think this thing might outlast the the bike.

There is a newer EK ZZZ with covered pins. It's a little heavier than the old one.

I have run the DID and the Ek ZZZ and the EK was better for me.. I only got 8,000 miles out of the did and then the o rings started breaking. Now I'm running the Three D looks sexy as hell and very nicely made but also pricy....

Yea I've been looking at the D.I.D. and EK. The company that I'm getting the extension kit from sells a chain for like $120.00 but idk what kind of chain it is and I've heard like two people say they're not too good. Also, does anyone know how important the "tinsel" strength is on a chain? I'm usually fairly knowledgable about bikes and maintenance but one thing I've never been up on was chains. I've always changed them on my dirtbikes and just slapped a new chain on but since I do have one of the most powerful or "the most powerful" bike ever made, I do want to do more research and get a better chain. Is there much of a difference between the 525 and 530?

I'm also wondering if I can get away with a 140 instead of a 150 since I don't plan on using the full stretch of the extensions.

SPROCKET/DRIVE CHAIN REPLACEMENT...CHECK OUT THE INTRO FOR SOME REASEARCH TIDBITS

"Converting chain pitch is something that might be worth considering if rotating mass reduction is of importance. The ZX-14 sprockets and chain are 530 pitch. Liter bikes are using 525 pitch chains and sprockets and may be enjoying a significant reduction in rotating mass (I have been told about 1.5 pounds less) over the larger sport bikes. Some companies (Vortex, for one) will convert ZX-14 sprockets to 525 pitch. Boosted liter bikes are making as much torque as a 14 without converting to 530 pitch sprockets. I stayed with 530 pitch. That seems to be what most other owners have done regardless of riding style."

I guess you're takinga little extra risk going with 525 pitch. Most people cautioned me against it but consider the boosted liter bike example. It's your call.

Thanks Rook. I'm going to go with a 530, I just need to figure out now if I'll be able to go with a 140 instead of a 150.

the saying goes is one link per inch of stretch so 6 inch stretch would be 6 extra links over stock.

Thanks bobby. I'm going to go with the EK ZZZ 530 150 and just take links out if I have to. I found it for $200.00. Not too bad of a price.

I kept the 530 size but on my 10R I installed a 520 actually. I figured with the smaller torque motor and less weight I'd be on. But I have to say it looks pretty small next to the 14 for sure!

What does 140-150 refer to, the # of links?

Yea Rook. I ordered the chain last night from motorcycle superstore. They do price matching and they ship anything over $89 for free. I ended up getting the EK ZZZ 530 150. Bobby, I'm sure I'll have some laying around from this chain because I don't think I'm going to need all 150. Somefun, I'm going to stay with the 530 as well.

Great choice and keep the extras for an emergency, do you know how to count the links? find the number of links and divide by 2, that would be the number of side plates you count 114 would be 57 sideplates but you count to 56 and the master link makes 57.
