Pulling the bike apart...
08/23/11 6:07 PM

somewhat. I have decided that the 14 needs an up date. This past weekend I went to the local home improvement store and bought some painting supplies. I'm going to paint the Foreman grills, the ribs on the mirrors, the front fender ribs, the brake and clutch reservoir caps. I bought the Valspar luscious green in the rattle can, along with plastic primer, a satin clear coat and 600 grit sand paper. I will be installing a TRACKSIDE 12 Volt Power Adapter for my GPS/phone and a Zero Gravity Smoked Sport Touring Windscreen. I also bought those covers for the brake and clutch reservoirs that look like wrist sweat bands. The brake one says "Ninja" (in green letters) and the clutch is blank and they both are black.

I know that the green Foreman grills will make it look like a Monster Edition but I will not have the "M" on the side fairings or the black wheels with a green strip. I just wanted green highlights on the bike. Once I get all the painting and parts on, I will post up before and after pictures to let you all comment on it. I want you guys to tell me the truth if you like it or hate it! No beating around the bush and saying things like "It's nice but not on my bike" kind of stuff! The truth will set you free my friend! ha ha!

Anyway, the ZG screen should be here on Wednesday and I already bought the paint, 12V power outlet and the covers. I'll work on it this weekend and hopefully have pictures up early next week!

I'm going to paint the Foreman grills, the ribs on the mirrors, the front fender ribs, the brake and clutch reservoir caps.

Post some pics, Bears.

I will also be painting my foreman fins. I'm going with blue on the recessed lines and white fins. Thanks for the Valspar idea. I like Skydive Blue. Have to stop down to the Lowe's and check on rattle cans.

Bears, if you have any prep suggestions, please post.

My practice run on sheet metal was just okay. Did not get a perfectly clean edge. Perhaps I did not burnish the tape down hard enough. ALso prolly too heavy a coat. Thinking it may be best to apply a very light coat first so that it dries instantly and seals the tape edge. Then hit a bit heavier??

Bears, if you have any prep suggestions, please post.

Rook, I've been checking on-line and it looks not to hard to prep the fins and other parts.

What I plan on doing is...

1) Remove all parts from bike
2) Degrease all parts and clean with soap and water
3) Tape off area that will not be painted with that Blue painters tape and newspaper
4) Sand with 600 grit sandpaper, make surface dull
5) Remove sanding dust from parts
6) Apply plastic primer, 2 thin coats <10 minutes apart
7) Wait at least one hour before paint coat
8) Apply paint, 2 thin coats <10 minutes apart.
9) Wait <10 minutes and apply first coat of clear
10) Remove tape and newspaper
11) Apply second coat of clear to the entire part
12) Let dry over night
13) Install

Thinking it may be best to apply a very light coat first so that it dries instantly and seals the tape edge.

That's what I'm thinking!

And you know I will post a few pic when all is said and done!

Thanks, Bears.

If I screw up, I was offered a new set of Formans from the stealer for ~90$ tax included.

I think that since I am painting the fins white, maybe I might as well paint the recessed lines that trail back from the fins white too. Then go over that with blue in the recessed areas only. Having a light colored base always makes colors seem a little more vibrant that going light over dark. Only prob, I think I will end up with a hairline of white around the edge of the blue---unless i retape it a tiny bit farther out before applying the blue.

[i tried to paint my foremans like your trying and failed miserably. paint didnt stick well, i dont think i did a good enough job on the prep! so lesson learned , i bought some grills from a friend who went with flat sided pieces and i love the green hilights! if you go back a few pages to my post "counterfeit monster edition" there are some pics there with the monster grills on my black bike. no Monster Ms in sight.

Bean, you are the reason that I'm doing this. I remembered you doing it a few months back and I finally said to hell with it, I'm doing it! I really like the way our fins turned out with the liquid chrome.

yeah, Bean, that is cool! I think the metalic paint would be a bit easier to use because it is very opaque. It is not real necessary to try to flow the paint on to make it cover. That is where the solvent in the paint is going to soften up the tape and seep under before the film dries. That is why I am thinking to apply a very light layer of color first coat. not enough to give much of a wet appearance. Just something to seal the edge of the tape. Once that is done, it should be seep proof.

Toright there rook the first coat is just like dust/peppered/mist
to apply a very light layer of color first coat.
to help the second coat not to run Bros + not to weeping under the tape !plus I used 1200 grit sanding so it would stick great but look smooth after the paint job! Ps.When will this end LOL for about the last four mods i,ve done, each time I said to my mates thats the last thing im doing LOL Dbb/Bub Screen, fairing mesh, drop pegs, bar risers & NOW! yesterday i,ve just ordered some Heal Gaurds WELL now thats IT !.................er till I see something else I like

Bean, as long as we own the 14, the mods will never stop. I told the wife that I was done moding, and she tossed that back at me when I went to buy the paint and supplies. Oh, well...

MJG,
I was looking for something on the Babbittsonline site and found where they were hiding the ordering information for the centerstand kit.

99994F SKU: 99994-0125

It's listed on the OEM parts fiche under "options" http://www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/default.aspx

It's all good bean07, now we are back on topic.

Update...

Okay, this weekend I got the foreman fins painted, installed the 12V power outlet and the brake/clutch reservoirs covers on. I went to start the bike this morning to go to work and the damn thing was dead. I guess I killed the battery from the 12V power outlet install. I placed the bike on the charger and we'll see how it is when I get home from work.

Did any of you wire the 12V outlet directly to the battery or to the fuse block? I wired it directly to the battery and I'm guessing that's why the bike died overnight.

I'll take a few pictures tonight and post them up in the morning.

Okay, ? I had the battery on the charger all day. I pulled the charger leads off the battery and let it sit for a few hours. Walked out to the garage, inserted the key, turned it to the start position, flicked the kill switch, hit the starter and the lights and display flickered and didn't start! ! Me think that the battery is toast! Off to Cycle Gear after work to pick up a new battery.

Me think that the battery is toast

ticka-ticka-tika-tika-tika-tika
alternates flashing bar graph top-bottom on the temp gauge.

dead battery. Mine went that way after I put a few miles on the bike early in the season. Was just fine and then dead. Happened right after I finished work on the bike too. Think it was after the SpeedoHealer install. Seems like it just suddenly shorted out. Charged up super fast to 12V (think that is what it said) but would not go higher or hold a charge.

I recommend a Shorai.

Pics of GRILLS, dude!
