throttle response
01/19/12 10:58 PM

This might not be the right forum for this but...the time has finally come for me a new bike My bro gave me permission to sell the busa (08) and get a bike of my choice...im trying to decide between the 07 gsxr 1k or a 14, the main reason why i liked the busa is because of the mode selector for the smoothness of the power delivery. because at the time it was my first bike. How is the trottle on the 14? is it snappy like i heard most of the 1000 cc bikes? i want my next bike with a smooth power delivery...will the 14 be right for me?

Never road a liter bike but I can say the throttle response at the extreme low end is as smooth and predictable as can be on the 14 at the smallest of throttle openings. There is a zing at 3.5 K rpm where the flies open. That is a little annoying and on a couple instances in taking sharp lefties from a stoplight, gave bit of a scare.

I remapped for my pipe and Autotuned and that all but eliminated the 3.5K spike. I feel it sometimes but it is very subtle.

The busa That i own(08) has no throttle control at the real fine openings. It's open or it's closed. You can't just crack it no matter how much yu adjust the throttle play (I have 0 play on both bikes). I can live with it but with so much motor, I often feel I need that fine control at small throttle openings. I sometimes run some decent rpm at small throttle openings especially in the corners.

I never road a liter bike. I am sure there are those that are snappy at low rpm and those that are snappppy up high. The 14 is just got power everywhere. It is just like the busa and you know how that bike is. Overall, very predictable in power delivery. You won't have it fly out from under you. If you treat it with a healthy respect, i think it's a pretty safe bike. Perhaps more so than the small sportbikes that wheelie so easily.

You don't need the mode selector anymore.

If I were you, I think I'd spend the extra cash on mods for the old busa. The 14 would be a little different looking bike but that's about it. Many say it is more comfortable....not by much, IMO. You are prolly going to feel the 14 feels a lot less neutral in steering at high speed and low speed. I do. You can get used to it but the busa feels a lot more under control in a corner with a lot less mental focus. If you're into that kind of riding, and have gotten quite used to the busa, I think you will have a hard time accepting the edgyness of the 14...but now we are really starting into a conversation wher literbikes are worth comparing to hyperbikes.

I have owned several literbikes, most recently a ZX10R (though about 5 gens down, lol).

The GSXR1000 will feel quicker to you than a ZX14, until you become comfortable enough with the ZX14 to twist the throttle hard.

A late-model ZX10R on the other hand, is quicker at most roll on rpm levels and gears. Because it has darn near as much horsepower (some say more) than a ZX14, and is over 100 pounds lighter.

Having ridden literbikes in the mountains of western Maryland and Pennsylvania and West Virginia and Virginia (sweet memories of coming down out of the Alleghany mountains into Virginia onto 211 to Sperryville, with as many curves as the dragon and more vertical drop as well) I can say there is a huge difference between those and my ZX14.

My ZX14 is too heavy to dance on switchbacks. Which is not to say she won't go around them in good form and rapidity. Just not as fast or sleek as my ZX10R used to do it.

I'm finishing the route planning for a 3-day ride for my mc this summer. We are doing like 4 3-days and 2 or 3 2-days, plus all the 1-days stuff at least twice a month. Every senior member is "encouraged" to develop a multi-day ride each off-season.

For mine, I'm taking them out the old National Road (Rte. 40) from Hagerstown MD almost to Ohio through PA, then diving down 219 and other state roads to get to 250, and transition into Hwy 39 (arguably the best motorcycle road in the country, possibly the world - mountain passes, forests, meadows, steep drops off mountains, etc.) before ending at the motel for night one. Day 2 is just more of the same, ending at a motel over near Luray VA. Day 3 runs down out of the mountain onto Hwy 211 into Sperryville, where we will spend a few hours because 100's of bikers gather there after running 211. Then down and onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, headed north, to home around dusk.

I bring that up, because I will captain (lead) that ride, and my wingman will be very important. Because on my ZX14 there are hundreds of places on that route I will get so far ahead of the rest of the ride that the wingman has to hangback and talk to me over Scala, he will basically keep the ride on pace.

Because the ZX14 handles extremely well, and will flat walk away in the twisties from anything but a 650R or ZX10R or Ducati literbikes (and other bikes costing twice as much as the ZX14).

So throttle response on the ZX14? Scare you chalk white it will. Slide you back against the seat bump it will. Make you happy you are holding onto the grips tight, it will.

And while it is at it, it will sport tour in moderate comfort and handle the twisties well.

Its a different world, and I find it at least as fun as my literbikes have been, just in a different way.
