2017 ZX14R.....details?
07/18/16 1:39 PM

We the people would like to know what Kawasaki has in the works for the next gen 14R...will it be a 2017 or 2018 model?? Is there any information about a refreshed 14R out there?? What are some things you'd like to see on the Gen 3? Here's a few off the top of my head:

1. Euro4 compliant engine/exhaust that doesn't sacrifice much/any horsepower
2. Lighter curb weight (the ZX14 -> ZX14R evolution saw an increase in weight)
3. Ride-by-wire throttle with Cruise Control either factory or as a factory option

1. Make sure whatever extra smog power robbing additions are easily removed.

2. Not lighter. Had 2 light bikes before this and heavy is noce at highway speeds.

3. LED lighting from the factory

4. Optional factory olhins for an upcharge.

5. Factory heated grips.

6. Nothing that makes the bike more complicated to work on or operate. Its a nice combo of bike and tech now.

That is all

As a racer:

1. Offer a stripped version that has none of the extra BS. (no traction control, no abs, no safety map, etc.)
2. Go racing.

1. Cruise control
2. 12V power outlet on the dash

Guess we're all after a different variation.

1.More power
2. See #1
I want enough power to just roll into the throttle in 3rd, and by the time 50% is reached, the front tire is leaving the pavement and nothing but letting off will stop it.

Darkarcher - I don't want it to be liter-bike light (400 ish lbs) but I would like to see us go from 591 lbs on the ABS models down to maybe 550 or 560 lbs. Highway speed stability is not only a factor of curb weight, but also wheelbase length, tires, aerodynamics, etc. I also would like to see heated grips (the S1000RR has them for crying out loud!) and LED lights.

Ride-by-wire would allow you to create different throttle response maps for riding modes, and has a benefit of allowing full electronic cruise control too.

More power is always welcome. Especially with the H2/H2R running around. Who knows if the next ZX14R will be a ZX16R with more displacement and naturally aspirated? It could also end up being the current displacement with a mild supercharger.

I demand a 1500cc Supercharged motor. I'm tired of the measly 195 hp we have now...

In no particular order:

1. Electronic throttle / ECU-controlled cruise control.
2. "Cold Weather package" option -heated grips + seat.
3. Same overall size. At 6'2", I like the wheelbase and fit on this bike.
4. 12v outlet up front, and spare 12v acc. lead under the passenger seat.
5. One main harness with all connectors for all options, to allow for easy add-ons after initial configuration.
6. A horn that actually gets attention.
7. Full LED lighting, or LED's + HID Projectors.
8. Removal of headlight DRL's, substituted by changing all 4 turn signal indicators into LED Switchbacks / DRL's.
White/Amber front, Red/Amber rear.
9. Shift lever capable of GP shift without changing rearsets.
10. Bring back Pearl Stardust White :)

We basically want a more powerful and faster bike with more touring amenities and comfort, with equal or less weight, at the current MSRP.

Bring it on.

TigerFire13 & Extrapolator - you guys got it right....the Pearl Stardust White is downright sexy on the 14R!!

Don't make it a pig on the track like the Busa is.

It is the perfect bike for me right now: content on the interstates as well as pretty damn good on the track actually. I wanted a bike that would happily do it all and I have it right now so if they update it and make it less of a track bike in favor of more touring I will be mad. Concours14 already exists dammit!

190/55 is overrated. 200/55 is where it is at.

It is very near perfect right now as it is, yes

I would like to see a bit less overall weight, and refreshed fairing design/aesthetics.. and a very vital point is to make sure my current Brock's CT dual exhaust system will fit it so I won't have to buy another

What would I want?

a bit more power wouldn't hurt.... but the level these machines reach when modded is easily good enough @ 200rwhp and 120 tq.

12v plugin or at least a phone charger port would be nice. Ideally I'd want all the extra goodies that are available on the R1, Super duke gt, Aprilia tuono, and bmw's. IE cruise control, heated grips, led lights, 6 axis imu, hill roll control, electronic suspension and such.

ALL the while keeping similar weight. 560 ish when the overweight factory exhaust is removed. a lot to ask, I know.

OR, update the C14 with those mods, and finally give it the 14r motor it deserves and I'll buy one of those.

Agreed, it seems like quite a few people that buy zx14s actually should be buying Connies. Especially those are more touring riders. There's your big weight. There's your stability, even more comfortable ergos, bags, etc. And still one helluva a fast bike.

Although again this is tough to argue because at least someone is buying a zx14.

"I want enough power to just roll into the throttle in 3rd, and by the time 50% is reached, the front tire is leaving the pavement and nothing but letting off will stop it."

I just want to ask how often are you guys going over 170mph? Reason I asked is that my last sportbike (daytona 675) was gearing limited at 156 and that was more than plenty for the street. On the 14r 16/45 would ring you out at 170 stock ECU and I think we can all agree that would be the wheelie king if you went straight to half throttle. You already have "more power" you are just not geared for it, and you would still have more distance between shifts than any 600. In fact it would be like a turbo 600 really

"Darkarcher - I don't want it to be liter-bike light (400 ish lbs) but I would like to see us go from 591 lbs on the ABS models down to maybe 550 or 560 lbs"

Not me. I lost 38 lbs when I swapped out the exhaust alone. Between that and a few other things I wouldnt want it any lighter. To each their own. I am looking forward to saving up for Carrozzerias which should put me close to 500lbs with an empty tank. I will hit the scales when I am done and report but I dont think this bike is as heavy as they make it out to be. Just start the lead removal process and you will be very surprised.

Probably one of the safest bikes I've ever owned. 2 cars, 1 plumbing truck tried to take my lane, but 6th gear told them otherwise. I'd like to have a little bit more insulting power, a bit more arm ripping/gripping power are my hands moving off the grips, it comes on sooner [mode] the better.... is for the next doorslammer sees dis next e4-generation is still Kingshit!

Most of the above, esp. tech upgrades like LED, TBW, etc.

Nice to have electronic adaptive suspension!

All Digital Dash, or at least Digital everything except for Tach. C'mon, that LCD screen could easily be 4X bigger and display everything at once instead of scrolling through...

How about an oil life indicator? Not that hard to add, just light transmission through a glass tube...

I wouldn't mind a Touring Bar option, where the bars are raised a bit and level to the ground. Make it easy to go back and forth between sport and tour mode...?

wet weight about 550 would be perfect stock, then losing 20-30lbs with an exhuast

zx14 with 16/45 that would be mad... and good point about the 170+ speeds you know i never get her up there. no sir..not this cat!

OK, as already said, each to there own.

Here's mine....

Better (LED) lighting.
Louder horn, MUCH louder!
Bit less weight but not essential.
More comfy seat for those 600+ mile days (no I DON'T want a GTR/Concours).
Cruise control. No matter if it's ride by wire or mechanical so long as it's got one.
Better, more efficient bubble screen as standard.
Definitely NO digital clocks! I love those analogue dials.
12v power outlet(s).

All of these things could be added easily without a major redesign.

As for making the bike more track friendly?
I doubt it. Not a major design brief IMO. This is a Sports Tourer. If you want a better track bike buy something more track focused to start with. The current 14R/ZZR is close to being the best all rounder out there. Just a few tweaks and a little titivation required please. JMO

Sounds like Suzuki is bringing out a new Busa, this would justify at least some kind of an upgrade if not plans for an even bigger engine or forced induction.

When is the new Hayabusa due? I googled a bit and the rumor mills are arguing amongst themselves whether it will be turbocharged/supercharged or remain naturally aspirated. There is also debate over the displacement, will it remain at 1,300 or bump up to 1,400. The current model is only Euro3 compliant, and on January 2017 all vehicles must comply with Euro4 standards. Manufacturers can, however, file for an extension of up to 2 years to continue selling Euro3 vehicles.

Suzuki wants to take the crown back from Kawasaki. I encourage them to unveil a 1,400+ cc naturally-aspirated 220mph capable (after removing limiter) hyperbike, and light the fire under Kawasaki's tail to design another Godzilla crushing ZX14R (ZX16R) in retaliation. 220 rwhp sounds about right :)

How bout a ZX17 in 2017. Kawi's marketing campaign would practically create and run itself: Get a 17 in '17

... OH, or Wanna go 217? Get a 17 in '17

After all, "there's no replacement for displacement".

And "power sells cars (OK bikes), but torque wins races".

Also ... there's this:

1700 would be ridiculous. Might as well buy a cruiser at that point. They need to lighten it up 40 lbs, that'll do more for acceleration than 20 more hp.

Ridiculous! That's exactly what Kawi does!

So you're sayin' I should keep my eyes peeled for it. 10-4!

I'm with Extrapolator here... Isn't the idea of the 14R to be at least somewhat ridiculous? I won't say no to a bigger ZX... my bank account might, but not me.
