Do we need heel and chain guards
09/10/10 1:42 PM

I just took my left heel guard and chain guard off to do some suspension work. The bike looks a little cooler to me without. I don't see that it is very likely to poke my heel in the chain unless I do a severe lateral hip rotation--sort of like the Horse position in martial arts.

Anyone have any bad experiences riding without heel guards or a chain guard?

I don't trust myself enough to do this.

I like the peace of mind knowing they're there. The chain guard is especially good for you're passengers, you wouldn't want your daughters getting their shoelaces/feet/etc wrapped up in the chain at speed now would ya?

Ah well, I was hoping to at least get away without the chain guard but I suppose everything can go back on. Maybe I'll get a hugger some day and that will make the chain guard something I like. The heel guards can always be painted the frame color to blend in.

I've seen CF guards. I think the solution is to get some rearsets on there. Who cares about the heel guards with a hot set of rearsets.

I have known people that left the chain guard off. They never had passengers on bike. Only had it on the bike at the 'strip because tech folks made them put it on.

Rook, when I get a new bike home, first thing I do before I go riding is pull the chaing gaurd off and bin it. Those things are ugly as sin, colect chaing goo and road grit like a magnet and if your not carrying passengers (which I don't) then just dead weight. Heel gaurd I leave alone, hit a bump in a corner at speed and you could get your foot into the chain, you don't want to find out. I think they look kinda cool anyway.
