outdoor cover
09/09/09 10:06 PM

I'm looking for a snug fit. I don't want anything that will balloon up in the wind. Must fit without having to fold mirrors back. Also want heat shields on pipe area. Should fit over dual exhausts. Should be water proof.

I see V.I.P. has them and they claim it is for the ZX-14 but obviuously that is not a 14 under there. Looks to loose and drapey to me.

Anyone have an idea for a good cover that will fit a 14 like glove?

I have a Guardian cloth cover for in the garage over the winter, and it is made really well, out of heavy material, and not undersized.

They make outdoor covers too. There are a number of brands, keep looking until you find something you like.

^^Nice, privateer. I was looking for both a cloth cover and an outdoor cover. They do not list the ZX-14 in the size chart but they list the ZX-12 and busa both as Medium. What size did you get and do you need to fold your mirrors?

Thanks, Scott. That looks a bit loose fitting compared to what I was envisioning but maybe I am expecting to much of a perfect fit. If I want it to fit nice and tight, maybe I will have to place grommets in the bottom and tie it or something like that.

I got a Falcon Defender 2000, and it looks like it fits better than the one in scottjkyl's pictures. Got it at nelsonrigg.com I think. Not sure if it is a LG or an XL. I can try to find out if you like. -bg

^^All I can tell everyone is if you get the Nelson Rigg dust cover(DC-500), you better go XL or maybe even XXL (which is listed as apropriate size for a Goldwing). I got the size L(up to 1300 cc motrcycle) and it fits extremely tight on a literbike. It started to rip a seam trying to pull it on my 14 with mirrors extended. <<That's one reason why I started this thread. You have to be very careful ordering stuff off the i-net where exact size or color are crucial. Best to get recommendations from owners or else buy from a local supplier where you can try it on your bike and turn right around and return if it don't fit. Same goes for apparel and helmets. I hate returning stuff in the mail.

Looks good, bg. What size did you get to fit your 14 and does it fit well with mirrors extended?

I think I got the XL, and it fits great everywhere. Yes on mirrors extended. -bg

My Dowco Guardian is "medium" size. It is the inside dust cover version, and it fits fine, but not all the way to the floor. Which I don't care about for in the garage.

I might go "large" for outside with the weatherproof one, so it comes closer to the ground.

I've got a Nelson Rigg that I think is an XL that covers the front end fine with the mirrors out but it hikes up in the back and won't cover past the whole sprocket and a lot of the rear wheel. An XXL might be better.

This is probably my fifth or sixth Nelson Rigg cover for as many bikes. They've all been good, but the plastic vent-hole flaps are brittle and cracking on this one. That and the fit has made me decide to get a new one, so I'm curious to see where this goes.

And the rearmost tip of the tail section has been abraded a little over time due to contact and movement from the wind. Midnight Blue Sapphire sure is pretty but oh man, does it scratch easily.

The Nelson Rigg XL. The fit isn't as good as it looks here, either. I really hate to see water dripping off the rear sprocket and disk.

The Nelson Rigg Falcon Defender 2000 doesn't look anything like this. I'll try to put it on the bike this weekend and get a picture of it. I think Nelson Rigg has several different models of covers... -bg

Mine is a Defender 400. If the Defender 2000 goes all the way to the ground or close to it, you just sold one for them and helped me tremendously. Thanks BG.

^^Same here. Thanks for pics everyone. I think this thread will help a lot of others looking for a cover. No wonder it is so hard to get a cover that fits the way you like if manufactures don't have uniform sizes between different models.

I park on/under this. Works great because nothing touches my bike. Just roll up on it, flip the top down, and snap the clips on the end. I have it staked to the ground with 2.5' stakes I made from some old bar stock. It hasn't blown away yet.

^^Saw that on Brock's site. That is pretty cool for an at home shelter but I can't see carrying it with where ever you go.

When I go on multi-day rides with the club, I just take the Nelson Rigg UV-2000 half-cover. It keeps the sun off the bike, and if it rains, it actually keeps a good bit off unless the wind is strong. Packs small too.

I'll tell you, redtrace, I would snag one of those tents in a heartbeat if I could park anywhere other than on the sidewalk. It's a great idea; thanks for posting the pics.

That Kawasaki cover looks very nice. In SA we do not have much of a choice but I bought an Oxford X large which fits so-so. I got my wife to sew two straps that you use on outdoor packs with the nylon interlocking clips just in front of and behind the wheels, and it stops the cover from flapping if the wind comes up on the rare occasion my bike is outside overnight. Works pretty well.

this is the ultimate cover for the long winter storage

Harley Bubble

The Harley Bubble is designed to constantly flow filtered air over the bike, providing a dust-free, condensation-free environment that greatly decreases the chances of corrosion during storage. The bike stays clean, dry, and best of all, can be viewed even while it's being stored. For indoor and North American use only. 110-volt only.

Why don't you guys fold your mirrors in?

Unless you fold them 100 times a day they will not loosen up
and wobble while you ride. Or you can just take them off for
extensive storage.

^^Actually, I was thinking about using the cover at work every day. That is more mirror folding than i want to do if it is not necessary. Winter storage, I'd fold.

That is freaking crazy. I'd almost think about doing that except then i would feel like my bike was Micheal Jackson. What will they do to you if you live in Brazil and you use one of those? Will the bike bubble gestapo come after you?

Thanks for the word on deniskirk, Scott. I will check that out.
