New ECU option - Haltech T1+T2
09/08/26 8:27 AM

:edit: Not "perfect" for ZX14s since I didnt realize gen2 14Rs no longer have a cam sensor in the head which complicates things. Gen1s and Connies should be a good match though!

Haltech dropped a new ECU recently that sits somewhere between the now discontinued 750 and 1500 Elites. Its based on the new Nexus platform, and is a much smaller unit that would be easier to hide on a bike, with integrated WiFi for tuning right from your phone and a built in 4bar MAP.

Looks perfect for ZX14s since most of the features it lacks from the bigger 1500 are things that don't matter to us like only controlling 2 VVT cams instead of 4, no DBW support, and runs 1-4(T1) or 1-6cyl(T2) instead of 1-8 so no V8s. It also doesn't have a built-in wideband, but can of course take a standard wideband analogue input so can reuse your existing one.

Price is also a few hundred cheaper than the outgoing 1500, and I plan on going this route for my standalone install this Christmas break.

Obviously I'm not sponsored or anything and never actually used it yet so it can be trash, so don't take this as a recommendation, just sharing what I've found.

Forgot to update, but I did realize that it since it supports 6 fuel channels as well, that may mean no secondary injectors if you are running them.

Not a huge issue IMO with modern larger injectors behaving well at low pulsewidths vs what we used to have available, but something to keep in mind for the guys still using staggered primary/secondary injectors vs a single large set.

Not sure if there is a workaround to that by setting up shared injector outputs so linked cylinders can fire off a single injector driver. Looks possible based on the "shaped opposing cylinders" option, but obviously haven't tried it so YMMV.

Looked into that T2 ECU. Something the Gen 2 bikes have that will cause some issues with real-world use (I imagine) , Is that there is no Cam sensor. Just a crank sensor. So you would need to set the crank timing on first install and somehow track that in the ECU, assuming it saves the value once power is cut. Or else you could get stuck with the bike trying to run 180 degrees out of rotation with crank.

The Standard ECU uses two MAP sensors. One reads 3 cylinders' pressure after primary throttle blade for fueling. The other reads one cylinders' pressure (pretty sure cylinder on left side of engine/opposite of clutch-side) which tells the ECU what phase the crank is in, more than the once every rotation sensor going "ON.OFF....ON.OFF....ON.OFF".

2 of the same sensors, 2 different purposes.

Learned that from Greg Smith from Boost By Smith. I guess if you have a Gen 1 Head with the cam sensor, it could be a lot easier to run. The MaxxEcu kit from Boost by Smith also reads the 1-cylinder MAP like the stock ECU does.

I didn't know about the dual MAP setup on the gen2, that's pretty weird! Seems like a silly way to get crank position, but shouldn't be a problem to just use a standard crank and cam trigger setup like any other 4cyl engine but that could definitely be an issue if the location for the cam sensor is not physically there on the gen2. Hopefully its just blocked off?

I will update with more info once I actually get the system and start installing it around December! My setup is on a concours14, so I have both a VVT intake cam and a cam sensor from the factory so that wouldn't be an issue for me but good catch. I had a gen2 ZX14 and never realized they did away with the cam sensor, weird!

Forgot you have the Concours. But there is not somewhere to put a cam sensor on a Gen 2 Head without custom work. Guessing just drilling a big hole for the sensor magnet to get close to the cam and then a second threaded hole to secure the sensor? Not sure if it can be done.

Wonder if the VVT will cause any hiccups or struggle with the tuning process. Sounds fun. Also finding someone to dyno tune could be a headache. I found most (90%) of the tuners out there like woolich flashes on stock ECUs and some do MaxxEcu and few do the fueltech and fewer do the alternative options. I would find a car tuner and discuss it with them. I feel like motorcycle shops are very selective, car tuners deal with a broader range of products.

Looking forward to updates on here

Yea it will be an interesting project for sure. Sucks that the boss doesn't exist on the gen2 head, that would add machining costs and you would also need an aftermarket gen1 cam with the boss to trigger it since I'm assuming the cam doesnt have the lobe.

I like the VVT since it can effectively make the intake cam larger or smaller at will, which is great for a turbo. I currently have it set to max advance below boost, which helps TQ and spool. Once boost starts building, I quickly shift to max retard, making the durations longer and stretching the top end while helping peak power. Currently though its just "guessing" on the boost transition since its only RPM based, but on the Haltech I can map it vs actual boost. Seems to work great, but I am worried about high RPM so I keep my redline at 10,500. Some have taken it to 11k but at the end of the day its a pretty large heavy weight hanging off the intake cam so dont want to push it.

I do all my own tuning, but finding a tuner would be tough if I couldn't. My buddy at the shop I work at is a Haltech specialist and he does all of our car EFI tuning, and he taught me quite a bit. He will help me dial in the more complicated stuff like the VVT solenoid setup to make sure I dont mess anything up, but I can handle the fueling and ignition tuning.

Im currently looking at the t1 for my concours build. Did you end up getting a haltech? Price wise its definitely similar to woolish + pvc 6.

Haven't purchased anything yet but also decided on the T1 instead of the T2 as well. I thought the T2 was a more advanced unit but the T2's only benefit would be the couple of extra IOs - its identical besides that. If I really needed more IOs it would be almost the same price to do the T1 with the IO16 expansion, and that way you get way more additional IOs that are also more capable than the internal ones anyway.

Plan is to wait until Nov to get it during the yearly Black Friday sale to hopefully save a few bucks and install in December during my time off. Since our harnesses are so cheap used, I am debating whether I want to repin my existing harness or just get a second used harness that I can strip down while its off the bike and trim it to just what I want to use and delete crap like the KIPASS from the harness completely.

After selling my stock ECU+KIPASS+Harness(which goes for good money), plus my existing Woolich and PCV setup, the standalone will basically pay for itself.

I also plan on adding something like the ACAS-X for more advanced wheelie control. With boost by gear and accel compensated pitch rate wheelie control I can dial in a perfect launch/slow speed roll without just blowing off the tire like it does now. The gearing is kind of nuts on these things since they are made for heavy 2up touring so first and second are real tough to keep under control without proper TC/wheelie control, and the very basic TC the bike does have is lost when you pull the secondaries so there is no safety net. I also plan on making an ESP32 CAN based LCD dash to replace the entire stock cluster, since I'm not spending the insane $2k+ or whatever Haltech wants for theirs. There are guides to follow where one can be made for around $500 with some basic electronics knowledge, and my buddy just did one for his Haltech powered turbo civic so I have a reference if needed.

Keep me updated for your cluster setup. Its definitely one of my main concern about going full haltech. Waiting for black Friday seems like a good idea. Might do the same. I just found a complete 2011 concour with light crash damage for 1800. I think i will pull the trigger on it to have everything in double

Smart idea to grab that with how cheap these bikes are. I got a spare complete engine, few driveshafts, complete swingarm, etc as spares and I plan to build up the motor slowly for the next stage when I up the boost (nothing too crazy just pistons, rods, ZX14 exh cam, and zx14 TBs). Its nice to know in the back of my head that I have a complete backup ready to go in case it pops since I'm pushing mine higher than I have seen anyone else do on these setups. It's been flawless so far and I'm a little over 10k miles on the setup, so knock on wood I wont need to use the spare motor before its built up lol.

I'll post the dash progress once I get started and have at least a prototype running. I'll probably be starting that soon to have it done before the Haltech goes in so I can install them both at the same time in December.

From what I can see through old searches, its usually at least 10% off for Black Friday so $100 or so cheaper. I'm just getting the ECU+connector and pins setup and will cut and repin my stock harness to keep things cheap and simple. Eventually I may do a fresh custom harness without all the extra crap I wont need like KIPASS system, but not really that important so not a priority.
